The Public Works Maintenance Worker I position performs manual labor tasks associated with water, wastewater and streets maintenance operations. This employee performs duties and tasks, which require a high degree of physical activity and effort, and is exposed to a variety of extreme weather and working conditions. Regular attendance is an essential job function and employment duties are routinely performed Monday-Friday, with additional hours as needed on-call. This position does not include any supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.
Essential Job Functions
- Inspects vehicles and equipment daily and performs routine and preventative maintenance as needed.
- Repairs damaged utility mains and services. Cleans and maintains sewer manholes and lines for stoppages.
- Flushes hydrants and turns valves.
- Cleans out, raises, and sets water meter cans to grade.
- Drives dump trucks to dispose of excavated materials and to pull trailer used to carry backhoe.
- Operates backhoe, front end loader, hydro excavation truck, jackhammer, and other equipment needed to excavate area for repair work.
- Performs other manual tasks associated with meter maintenance.
- Makes taps for water and sewer line services.
- Operates necessary hand and power tools for excavation and repair work as needed.
- Makes necessary repairs to concrete and asphalt streets, sidewalks and alleys.
- Monitoring and maintenance of the cities storm water and drainage systems.
- Graffiti removal from all city building and structures.
- Maintains guard and bridge railing throughout the city.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.

Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Six months to one year of experience in a related field preferred. A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's license with Combinations and Tanker endorsements or ability to obtain within six months is required. For advancement to a Maintenance Worker II position, the Maintenance Worker I must obtain a Class "D" Water Distribution License, Class I Wastewater Collection License or 60 hours of education towards TEEX training (trench safety, backhoe operation, continuing education and 2 years' experience for advancement).
Skills/Abilities
The Public Works Maintenance Worker I works closely with others as part of a team responsible for maintaining the water, wastewater and streets infrastructure within the City. This employee frequently performs tedious and exacting work as well as multiple tasks simultaneously in dangerous, noisy and distracting environments under time pressures. Tasks frequently subject this employee to safety risks related to operating heavy equipment in construction or traffic zones and occasional emergency situations. The Maintenance Worker I must be able to perform many physically demanding tasks, which involve a high-degree of concern for personal safety and the safety of coworkers, citizens and other individuals. The ability to effectively communicate and interact with coworkers and members of the general public using the English language verbally on a daily basis is essential. In addition driving skills are required for driving dump trucks and pulling trailer. Also certain skills in the use of hand tools are desired. The ability to take and follow directions is a must.
Physical Requirements
This position requires a high level of physical activity including but not limited to: hoisting, moving, and transporting objects in and out of City vehicles at a height of 48 inches. This position also requires the various tools, parts, materials and equipment weighing 30-106 pounds be vertically and horizontally transferred at heights ranging from a starting height of ground level to an end height of shoulder height. The tools, parts, materials and equipment will be horizontally transferred distances ranging from 10 feet to 50 feet. This position in conjunction with a co-worker, position a ramp weighing 150 pounds from a height of 36 inches to ground level; pulling and dragging objects, such as manhole covers and hoses, using a long handled pick and exerting a force from 23-120 lbs.; employing a variety of static and dynamic postures such as stationary, traverse, forward reaching, changing your body direction, handling (gripping & grasping), bending, communicating, crawling, balancing, fingering, ascending/descending ladders and steps, detecting a variety of scents, visually recognize objects near and far in order to complete daily tasks. Knowledge
Knowledge of mechanics and basic hand tools is required.
Working Environment
The Public Works Maintenance Worker I performs essential job functions outdoors in a field environment. The Maintenance Worker must be able to safely operate City vehicles. As well as, perform a variety of physical tasks at noisy, dusty, muddy or damp work sites exposed to temperature extremes and site hazards including fuels and other chemical substances, asphalt, cement dust, pollen, chiggers, spiders, bees, snakes and poison ivy.
Reporting Relationship
The Public Works Maintenance Worker I reports directly to the Public Works Crew Leader and indirectly to the Public Works Supervisor.
