Under general supervision of the Assistant Facilities Manager, oversees and coordinates the operations, maintenance and repair of duties associated with maintaining the Way of Life Facility, Lehi, and Salt River recreation athletic fields and swimming pools. This position also oversees the maintenance of the Way of Life Facility grounds. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and considered a DRIVING position subject to working on-call and weekend hours.

Distinguishing Features : The Recreation Maintenance Supervisor is distinguished from the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor position in that it only services the Way of Life Facility and the Lehi and Salt River athletic fields and pools.

Essential Functions : Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be comprehensive list of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

Examples of Tasks
1. Supervises, manages, and performs day-to-day maintenance operations at the Way of Life Facility, Lehi, and Salt River athletic fields and swimming pools and Way of Life Facility grounds. Develops and implements daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and seasonal schedules for priorities and deadlines. Establishes, updates, and ensures completion of a preventive maintenance program on all assigned facilities.

2. Ensures the timely maintenance and upkeep of the Way of Life Facility landscape maintenance work, including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, preparing flower beds for planting and planting flowers, applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, removing weeds, debris, and dead plants. Operates and maintains landscape irrigation systems and controls. Oversees and ensures the daily watering of grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Inspects landscaping on a regular basis to ensure that plants, shrubs, trees, grass, etc. are properly maintained and replaced as needed. Conducts regular checks of grounds to ensure they remain free from trash and debris; dispatch work crews as necessary for clean-up. Ensures all exterior trash cans within designated work areas are emptied on a regular basis.

3. Ensures the timely maintenance and upkeep of the Community's recreation athletic fields, including watering, mowing, trimming, edging, applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, removing weeds, overseeding, filling infield holes, and adding clay when necessary. Oversees and ensures the preparation of the Community's recreation athletic fields for use, including dragging the infield, chalking the field according the specified dimensions, watering the infield, and setting bases

4. Ensures the timely maintenance and upkeep of the Community's swimming pools, including cleaning mechanical equipment for pool operation and maintaining water filtration and chemical purification systems, intake and outlet valves, chemical feeders, pumps, seals, vacuum equipment, and metering devices. Oversees and ensures the required maintenance of pool facilities, including checking and maintaining chemical balances and water levels, performing regular maintenance and repairs on pool/spa filtration systems, backwashing, and maintaining filter baskets, skimmer baskets, and weir gates. Ensures pool, deck, common areas, dressing areas, and associated appurtenances are kept clean.

5. Coordinates with other departments to ensure recreation facilities are properly maintained and setup for scheduled events. Integrates day-to-day work order requests into the work schedule, including determining priorities and assigning the work order or special project to the worker(s) best able to complete the assignment.

6. Inspects assigned facilities on a periodic basis to identify potential repairs and other needs, ensure that day-to-day maintenance is being performed in compliance with established standards and guidelines, evaluate the general condition of the assigned facilities and provide recommendations to improve facilities and services.

7. Performs the full range of landscape, athletic fields, and swimming pool maintenance work as needed to ensure the efficient, effective, and timely completion of work.

8. Conducts regular inspections of work areas to monitor quality of service and work crew compliance with safety standards. Ensures all assigned staff have the proper tools, personal protective equipment, and other items to properly complete their assigned tasks.

9. Develops and coordinates training of assigned staff on the requirements of their positions, including grounds, athletic fields, and swimming pool maintenance techniques and practices. Works to improve professional working knowledge of facilities and grounds maintenance staff. Mentors assigned staff in all aspects of assigned duties and customer service.

10. Evaluates employees work performance and performs timely performance appraisals. Responds to staff questions regarding assignments, workloads, and other employee issues. Monitors and recognizes staff effectiveness and achievements as well as corrects deficiencies in performance.

11. Responds to emergency situations and performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance program and agency operation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, ordinances, customs and traditions of the SRPMIC.
  • Knowledge of the Public Works Department and assigned programs and duties.
  • Knowledge of personnel management and personnel performance reviews.
  • Knowledge of training processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of facilities and grounds maintenance generally accepted processes and procedures including equipment use and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Community's approved plant palette.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of swimming pool operations, principles of water filtration, chemical feed systems, the care and handling of pool chemicals, pumps, VFDs, automatic levelers, heaters, and pool appurtenances.
  • Knowledge of basic water chemistry for swimming pools.
  • Knowledge of hazards and proper safety protocols when working around bodies of water.
  • Knowledge of standard swimming pool safety precautions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of custodial and janitorial maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge of sports/ballpark maintenance procedures.
  • Skill in planning and assigning the work of subordinate staff to ensure projects are completed in accordance with established standards, guidelines, and time frames.
  • Skill in preparing reports of project costs, including estimates of materials, supplies, and labor.
  • Skill in supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate staff.
  • Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping work, including backhoes, shovels, rakes, sprayers, and mowers.
  • Skill applying lawn stabilizer and grass seed.
  • Skill operating and maintaining large commercial pools, chemical feed, pumps, and filtration systems.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill in using personal computer and related software.

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with tribal employees and community members and other customers.
  • Ability to manage, supervise and evaluate personnel; able to gather, interprets and compiles reports.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain simple and concise records and prepare accurate reports.
  • Ability to use work order software to track work order requests.
  • Ability to swim.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, climb, and bend.
  • Ability to work outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Ability to establish preventative maintenance programs for landscaping.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Ability to stand and walk approximately 90% of workspace.
  • Ability to use cleaners, chemicals, weed killer and fertilizer.
  • Ability to reach high work areas by climbing, ladders, steps, or using scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift arms above shoulder to perform work tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED and a minimum of five (5) years grounds and swimming pools maintenance, at least two (2) years of which involved lead or supervisory responsibilities in grounds and/or swimming pool maintenance responsibilities.


  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.


  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.


Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
