We are seeking a Refrigeration Mechanic to work under the direction of the Physical Plant Supervisor. This position is responsible for repairs and maintenance for heating, ventilation and cooling equipment (HVAC); manual repair of AC units; change out compressors, reversing valves, receiver dryers/filters; adjusting and replacing thermostats; repair evaporative coil fans, blower motors and blower fan belts; replace air filters and assist with replacement of units.

Experience requirements

Requires possession of, and ability to retain, a current valid Arizona-issued drivers license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to drivers license records checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

Must be Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 in Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 OR Universal certification to buy and recover all refrigerants

Qualifications

Certification in heating, cooling, and ventilation practices; five years of experience working with residential, commercial, and industrial heating, cooling, ventilation systems, chiller systems, boiler systems, cooling towers; four years of experience inspecting, servicing, repairing, and installing cooling/refrigeration equipment and systems. Any combination of training and experience that meet the knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Responsibilities

Inspects and evaluates maintenance, repair, remodeling and/or construction projects including minor/major heating, cooling, ventilation repair, installation, and troubleshooting
Repairs boiler, water softener, chillers, and other operating systems
Completes maintenance work including work orders, repairs, carpentry, plumbing, welding, masonry, maintenance, painting, heating/cooling, fire alarm system, electrical, and tool repair
Inspection and preventative maintenance on facility structures, tools, and equipment
Reviews and applies preventative maintenance programs for heating, cooling and ventilation systems
Determines and develops modification for new elements to preventative maintenance programs
Develops costs estimates for projects involving heating, cooling, and ventilation and other areas of building maintenance
Ensures compliance of all Federal, State, and Local requirements, codes, and regulations
Operates a motorized vehicle, motorized equipment, and electrical tools/equipment
Ensures and demonstrates safety rules and procedures
Assists with minor remodeling and construction of buildings
Performs periodic standard inspections and preventative maintenance on tools, equipment and correctional buildings
Performs correction repair on all tools, equipment and utilities support services
May be utilized in supporting the Grounds and Custodial personnel as directed
Attends staff meetings as required
Orders and reorders supplies or tools as needed
Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge of:
Methods, practices and theory of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
Freon installation and recovery in HVAC systems
Diagnosing heating, cooling, and ventilation malfunctions
Safety practices pertaining to maintenance work environment
Multi-meters to troubleshoot circuits, relays, continuity, logic controls, gas safety valves and motor controls, 24V to 480V
Single phase and three phase systems
Capture, recycle, and recharge refrigeration systems
Types and uses of various refrigerants
Safe pressure levels
Safe refrigerator and freezer temperatures and HVAC codes
Methods and practices involved in remodeling and construction and installing and replacing major utility services
Blue prints, sketches, schematics and structural components of building and related utility systems
National and local building codes and common safety practices
Common and specialized meter, tools, equipment and materials related to the trade
