POSITION PURPOSE:
Utilize the perioperative nursing process to plan and provide total, direct patient care before, during, and immediately after surgery according to established standards and practices.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Perioperative Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing (or delegating), and evaluating patient care preoperatively, intraoperatively and immediately post operatively. Standards of Perioperative Nursing Practice have been established by the Association of Operating Room Nurses, the Alaska State Board of Nursing, state statute, and the American Nurses Association. The Perioperative Registered Nurse performs all of the activities required to provide perioperative care within the surgical area.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska.
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in a critical care or post anesthesia care setting is desired.
  • Must possess, and maintain a Basic Life Support Certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Basic keyboarding and computer/word processing skills are required for data entry into the electronic health record.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commission, proportions, percentage, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule forms.


ENVIRONMENT:
South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed acute care and 28 bed long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The surgery unit consists of two rooms, one main general room and another for local endoscopy procedures. The working environment is generally pleasant, clean, and well maintained. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. Trained dexterity and strength to use specialized surgical instruments and assist the surgical team during procedures often requiring strenuous manipulation. The employee is frequently required to stand, sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
