Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for providing professional nursing care in an assigned specialty or sub-specialty clinic. They perform a variety of general and specialized nursing duties as part of a total health care team to provide the patient with complete evaluations. Employees in this position generally assist the head nurse in the supervision of other clinic personnel and may substitute for this person in the event of his/her absence. May supervise and instruct subordinate nursing personnel. Receives supervision from head nurse or physician, functions independently within guidelines. May supervise ancillary nursing personnel in the performance of certain tasks, and assists in training personnel. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions

• Will assist the Sr. Staff Nurse and Head Nurse in the daily management and oversight of efficient clinic operations , specifically with the nursing staff and medical assistants.in the clinic setting. Handles any issues that arise, as needed. Review clinic schedules and staff assignments.
• Oversees and ensures that all patients are prepared for exams, takes history, VS, Ht, Wt, assesses reason for visit, and documents in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), accordingly.
• Will assist Head Nurse and Sr. Staff Nurse in overseeing that all necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, specialty and minor procedures are available and will assists physicians in the procedures.
• Administers medications as instructed, noting side effects and contraindications to pt. and documents in EMR.
• Obtains specimen for laboratory tests and prepares paperwork as needed. Documents in EMR as required.
• Provides patient education on procedures, dressing changes, for care at home. Ensure staff is trained on the various procedures done in their service line and oriented to the proper education of the patients.
• Responsible for supervision of staff in the clinic area, but not limited to to include but not limited to Clinical Assistants, LVN's. Will work in conjunction with the Head Nurse and Sr. Staff Nurse to provide input when performing staff evaluations, disciplinary actions, and preparation for staff meetings etc.
• Assist the Head Nurse in assuring that clinic equipment is operational and supervises the operation of specialized equipment. Also, responsible for ensuring the care and maintenance of this equipment. Provides training to staff, as necessary in the use of equipment.
• Assist the Head Nurse and Sr. Staff Nurse in assuring that clinic equipment is operational and supervises the operation of specialized equipment with CMA's. Also responsible for ensuring the care and maintenance of this equipment in coordination with the Clinic manager. Provides training to staff as necessary.
• Assists Sr. Staff Nurse and Head Nurse in providing in-service training to existing and new clinic staff. Ensures new and current staff comply with all TTUHSC mandatory training's.
• Ensures inventory of necessary supplies and equipment is maintained for diagnostic and treatment procedures in conjunction with Sr. Staff Nurse. Also, responsible for ensuring exam/procedure rooms are clean and stocked with necessary supplies and equipment.
• Addresses patient complaints or issues, concerning health problems, treatments, etc. Offers instructions and ensures that the situation is corrected or refers to appropriate personnel.
• Oversees the screening of incoming patient telephone calls to determine urgency of situation and what action should be taken. Oversees all medical calls. Ensures that all CMA's have telephone system.
• Attends supervisory and administrative staff meetings to discuss unit operations and staff training on an as needed basis. Will Assist the Head Nurse and Sr. Staff Nurse in manual and policy development.
• Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous work experience in a hospital or ambulatory setting of at least one year.
• Experience with EMR systems, Joint Commission policies, and experience in supervising employees.

Required Qualifications
Education:

• Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of professional nursing or scheduled to complete a program of professional nursing within 120 days of applying for a position.

License/Certification:

• Current Registered Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice professional nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX- RN) on the first attempt.
