DESCRIPTION

Divisional Overview:

The Division of Biological Sciences is a large and complex division within Academic Affairs with four academic sections (department equivalents), Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology, Behavior and Evolution, Molecular Biology, and Neurobiology, with a Shared Services Administration unit structure supporting the Dean, the Division and the four Sections/Departments. BioSci reflects broad foci in faculty research and in the academic programs offered by the Division. Our mission is to advance knowledge of basic biological sciences and apply our research discoveries in ways that improve human health, protect our environment and enrich our economy. We fulfill our mission every day by educating and preparing the next generation of scientists, physicians, medical researchers and educators for 21st century careers, and by increasing public understanding of biology and encouraging scientific discovery among K12 teachers and school children. Position Overview:

Under supervision of the Sponsored Projects Manager, the Research Administrator 1 will develop pre- and post-award administration in a limited scope in the Division of Biological Sciences. This will include the budget development, pre-award proposal initiatives, management of funds post-award, and closeout activities for federal, state, local and private sponsors. Implement and monitor funding in UCPath, track financial transactions, reconcile and audit ledgers and payroll, provide regular analysis of assigned funds. Implement and execute annual fiscal close required processes and assist where necessary. Provide standard financial reports and projections. Ensure compliance with institutional and research sponsor policies and follow institutional procedures and practices when analyzing or reviewing financial information or reports. Participate in special projects on request and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Ability to learn and develop understanding of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines.

  • Ability to learn and develop understanding of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.

  • Ability to perform routine financial analysis and reporting. Ability to analyze and prepare budgets, identify spending patterns and project future expenditures based on available data

  • Proficiency working with computer and information management systems. Experience working with computer and information management systems. Strong computer skills in a PC environment using various business software programs (spreadsheets, word-processing, and databases) with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Basic knowledge of common sponsored award mechanisms.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population. Ability to maintain confidentiality as required, using good judgment and discretion.

  • Experience working in or familiarity with a university or related environment. Ability to interpret and apply university policies and procedures regarding purchasing, return goods, travel, disbursements, inventory, and audits.

  • Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.

  • Working knowledge of or familiarity with other UC San Diego Core administrative computer systems, such as Kuali, UCPath, Concur, and Oracle Financial, preferred
