Job Description:
The School of Earth and Space Exploration's NASA/ASU Psyche mission (https://psyche.asu.edu/) Multispectral Imager team (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCmIZ_sZbEM) has an open Research Analyst position. The primary roles of this position include:
1) Analyzing Imager and spacecraft data and telemetry to monitor the health and safety of the instruments;
2) Validation and assessment of downlinked image data and Imager/spacecraft telemetry and processing of that information into Imager data products;
3) Generation, validation, and delivery of Imager command sequences to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Psyche operations team for eventual spacecraft uplink; and
4) Processing of Imager data products into calibrated images, global mosaics, and, working with stereo and photogrammetry tools, Digital Elevation Models and other 3-D data products to be archived at the NASA Planetary Data System

Essential Duties:
- Work with the Imaging Team Lead and Operations Lead to ensure Imager instrument mission success
- Develop imaging plans and sequences for asteroid mapping
- Communicate operations plans to JPL Science Operations Support Team
- Monitor real-time telemetry during Imager operations
- Help to develop processes and software to perform photogrammetry analysis using Imager data
- Help to develop processes and software to create Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and other 3-D stereo products using Imager data
- Perform instrument trending analysis
- Process downlinked images into calibrated products and mosaics
- Generate new or update existing documentation describing operational and data processing procedures
- Develop and maintain software that facilitate operations tasks
- Generate daily, weekly, and monthly activity reports as needed
- Other duties as assigned by the Imaging Team Lead or Operations Lead
- Occasional travel to NASA/JPL in Pasadena, CA or other mission-related facilities in the U.S. could be required
Desired Qualifications:
- Spacecraft and/or space instrument operations experience
- Demonstrated working knowledge in the use of Linux, MS Windows, and/or MacOS operating system for data analysis
- Demonstrated knowledge of a scripting language, for example: bash, csh, python and/or ruby
- Demonstrated working knowledge of any remotely sensed image processing software package, for example: ENVI/IDL, ISIS, OpenEV
- Demonstrated working knowledge of stereo photogrammetry software and techniques
- Demonstrated working knowledge of methods/tools used to create Digital Elevation Models and other 3-D surface topography data sets
- Knowledge and/or use of NAIF SPICE
- Knowledge and/or use of PostgreSQL database
- Knowledge and/or use of Github and Docker
- Demonstrated use of MS Office products (Word, Powerpoint, Excel)
- Experience generating and validating NASA PDSv3 or PDSv4 data products
- Experience with working as part of a team or independently on assigned tasks
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate key messages and ideas clearly and effectively
- Proactively identifies opportunities for improvement and takes initiative to implement solutions
- Strong problem solving skills
- Use critical thinking to make decisions and/or analyze data
- Ability to maintain traditional on-site work schedule
- Ability to support non-traditional work hours when needed
Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (25). Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. Calculator, telephone, computer (monitor, keyboard and mouse), printer, fax and copier. This position receives general review of objectives.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's degree and one (1) year of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
