Carpenter Co. has an opening for a Research Engineer at our Reinhart Technical Center in Richmond, Virginia. This position is responsible for supporting internal groups and external customer requests by coordinating and overseeing day-to-day operations in the Reinhart Technical Center Physical Testing and both the Large and Small-Scale Flammability Testing Laboratories.

Carpenter Co. employees are committed to working hard to ensure production goals are met while maintaining operations excellence. As the successful candidate, you will be expected to demonstrate good laboratory practices including good recording of experiment work and project information tracking.

Your additional responsibilities as a Research Engineer will include:

  • Work with outside vendors in maintaining calibration schedules and also periodic equipment repairs in the Reinhart Technical Center Physical Testing and Flammability Laboratory Testing areas and perform internal equipment and laboratory calibrations as needed.
  • Support laboratory technicians as needed in testing functions.
  • Research and improve internal work instructions and also equipment required for future testing needs.


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • 2-5 years of experience in a science / engineering-based field
  • Proficient with MS Office and statistical methods used for controlling and improving laboratory systems.
  • Self-motivation and a drive to exceed expectations
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities on a daily basis
  • Experience in a material and/or flammability testing laboratory setting
  • Experience with acoustic test methods
