Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology seeks a motivated individual to provide technical support to the teaching and research missions of the Department. Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB) does research in a wide variety of areas- from materials science to biochemistry. Our undergraduate classes provide chemical lab experience to science and engineering majors. As the use of scientific instrumentation grows, the department needs an individual dedicated to keeping that instrumentation operating at its best.

The selected candidate is expected to perform a variety of duties including, but not limited to, performing cryogen fills, maintaining, repairing, and cleaning instrumentation, training users in instrument usage, assisting in the NMR and Mass Spec facilities, and providing back-up to the Chemical Safety Officer. The Department will provide training in Cryogen handling and Chemical Safety- prior experience in these areas is not required. It is essential that candidates are capable of working independently after being instructed in procedures by senior staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensuring that functional teaching lab equipment is available for scheduled undergraduate classes, including performing performance checks, preventative maintenance, and repairs.

Make this equipment available to researchers when possible.

Perform croygen fills in the NMR and Mass Spec Facilities.

Provide troubleshooting and assistance to users of the NMR and Mass Spec facilities.

Obtain some data in these facilities.

Deliver chemicals to labs.

Miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or directly related field.
Experience working with, repairing, and maintaining instrumentation.

Knowledge of NMR, Mass Spec, cryogens.

Knowledge of chemical experimentation.

Knowledge of scientific equipment, use, maintenance, repair.

Ability to self-motivate and set priorities.

Ability to learn NMR and Mass Spec procedures.

Ability to learn cryogen handling.

Comfortable handling chemicals and working in a chemical laboratory.
