JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a qualified Research Scientist to support the Public Health Research Department. NORCs Public Health staff work closely with colleagues in Health Sciences and Health Care to offer program, policy, and research solutions. DEPARTMENT: Public Health

The Public Health Research team conducts work on a variety of public health topics including chronic disease prevention and health promotion, rural health, health disparities, and social determinants of health. Our team includes prominent health policy experts, nationally recognized public health researchers with general and specialized expertise in areas such as rural health and tribal issues, skilled methodologists, and leaders in the field of survey design and implementation. Our staff also brings expertise in populations of special interest and the intersection of public health and health care delivery. We offer broad, multidisciplinary experiences spanning public health, epidemiology, statistics, policy, developmental psychology, economics, sociology, social work, and political science.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as task leader with budget responsibilities on complex scientific and or technical components of large projects or a series of smaller projects.
  • Design research studies in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers.
  • Author and present research at client and professional meetings and lead drafting of final project reports. Submit articles for publication in refereed journals.
  • Author sections of analysis reports, technical reports, OMB clearance packages, and other documentary deliverables.
  • Assist with quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Monitor task budget and schedule.
  • Supervise staff involved for specific tasks and projects.
  • Engage in business development activities including authoring various sections of the technical proposal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Bachelors Degree in the social sciences required; Masters Degree or PhD preferred.
  • At least 7 years experience in positions of increasing responsibility in program evaluation, research, survey design or related field including at least 3 years' of social science project management.
  • Experience with the design and execution of social science research and in publishing research results, with a strong career-appropriate record of peer-reviewed technical publications.
  • Advanced understanding of mixed-method study designs, and especially quantitative methods and analysis.
  • Experience conducting health communication research and evaluation.
  • Experience conducting research related to the social determinants of health and health equity.
  • Strong problem solving, project management, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in client communications and relationship management.
  • Solid technical writing skills.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office software; strong proficiency with statistical analysis packages.
  • Must have experience managing and mentoring staff.
  • Occasional travel to client meetings may be required.
