Job Description

Grand Canyon University's Residence Life department is seeking a full time Resident Director. This position is responsible for the direction and coordination of the Community Learning Plan (CLP), which intentionally points students to the educational priority of, as a result of living in University housing, students will become Christ-like servant leaders through an awareness of self and engagement with others. The three learning goals of the CLP are self-awareness, community and relationships, and servant leadership. The learning strategies used to meet these goals are intentional conversations, community gatherings, passive programming, workshops and all living area events.

The Resident Director will serve as the main facilitator and curriculum developer in the CLP.

The positions core hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., planned weekends and will partner in the on-call rotation for emergency response. RDs will work additional hours as necessary. In addition to salary and benefits compensation, the RD will be provided with an apartment, cell phone and meal option.

Responsibilities

Residential Learning:

  • Oversees the Resident Assistants (RA) in the planning, administration, execution and assessment of CLP within the living areas.
  • Challenges students to initiate and develop healthy interpersonal relationships with their peers.
  • Supports and initiates CLP goals, cultural diversity and the Universitys mission for spiritual development.


Administration & Supervision:

  • Functions autonomously or collaborates with tri/co-Resident Director depending on assigned living area.
  • Assists with room assignments and changes for his/her living area throughout the year and assists check-in and check-out in cooperation with Housing Operations.
  • Supervises and manages the physical condition of the living area. Communicates with residents and facilities to repair and maintain the building.
  • Assists in the overall health and safety of students in their living area. Supervises Resident Assistants in the health & safety inspection process. Assists in required fire drills throughout the year.
  • Serves on RD committees, to offer input and improvements in specific elements of Residence Life. Examples include: Health & Safety, Athletics, RA Training, RA Selection, and Roommate Conflict Resolution.
  • Alternates with other Resident Directors for weekly on-call availability for all campus residents. Resident Directors take turns covering major holidays.
  • Assists in the selection of new Resident Assistants in the spring.
  • Other special duty assignments (e.g. assist in Residence Life Office, partner with Student Conduct, etc.).

Mentoring, Coaching, & Role Modeling:

  • Available to residents for discussion of concerns and problems and appropriately refers residents to proper departments and resources as needed.
  • Provide guidance, support, and direction to Resident Assistants.
  • Maintains an attitude of discipleship and serves as a support and resource to students in their quest for spiritual growth.
  • Models behavior that reflects a commitment to uphold the university standards of conduct in one's own life, on and off campus consistent with the lifestyle expectations of Grand Canyon University students on campus.
  • Mediates conflict between roommates and suitemates to find resolution and compromise for a healthy, respectful living environment.
  • Meets on a regular basis with supervisors, RD peers in staff meetings, RA Staff and individual meetings with RAs to discuss policies, procedures, programs, concerns, resident problems, discipline situations, and personal development issues with students.

Intervention & Accountability

  • Understands and can communicate the rationale for University regulations.
  • Assists, confronts, and intercedes in disciplinary and emergency situations as they arise in the living areas, provides the appropriate written and verbal behavioral data relevant to administering guidance, support, and/or discipline, and reports/refers to supervisors and Student Conduct Staff.
  • Supports or does not openly disagree with University regulations.
  • Serves as a resource and referral support to faculty, staff, parents, and other University constituents.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
  • 1 - 3 years relevant experience in the area of Student Affairs in Higher Education.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work autonomously and on teams.
  • Ability to balance administrative and relational tasks.
  • Presents self in a professional manner, reflecting the goals and standards of GCU.
