Job Description
ASU's Environmental Health and Safety is looking to hire an experienced Safety Technician for Hazardous Waste handling for the university. Monitors, controls, and processes biological, chemical, radioactive materials and associated hazardous wastes which includes but is not limited to: disposal, moving, storage, inventory, instrument calibration, surveys, and clean-up. Incumbent will move heavy objects. Pay range is $50,000 - $60,185 per year; Depends on experience.
Essential Duties:
Performs routine and frequent heavy labor tasks related to on and off-site handling storage, packaging, transport and/or disposal of hazardous materials.
· Processes routine incoming hazardous material shipments.
· Arranges for the safe handling of hazardous materials, including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive materials.
· May assist in maintaining inventory and storage of hazardous materials (e.g., biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive and potentially radioactive substances).
· Participates in processing hazardous materials which includes receiving, logging, labeling, segregating, classifying, and packaging.
· Assists in performing radiation measurements and maintaining security of material and waste in storage in areas and processing sites.
· Maintains, calibrates and operates measuring equipment (e.g., equipment used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, and radiation detection).
· May participate in routine swipes and exposure surveys of hazardous materials storage and processing sites and documents results; collects samples and performs routine analyses and processes analytical data.
· Uses chemical identification supplies (e.g., pH paper, test strips) and reports hazards according to documented procedures.
· Assists staff in a wide variety of duties including surveys, calibration of instruments, and material inventory.
· Assists in inspections to ensure compliance with the organization’s policies, procedures, regulations and standards related to hazardous materials.
· Makes observations and summarizes data regarding the status of various systems as assigned.
· Prepares and maintains complete, concise and legible records of activities as required.
· Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials incidents at a specific site.
· Assists with testing and servicing equipment and systems.
· Participates as a member of the University spill response team.
· Participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies as required.
· Participates in respiratory protection program;
· Participates in University medical surveillance programs, which may include vaccinations.
· Provides advice, assistance and monitoring services to personnel on routine matters.
· Operates trucks, pumps, vacuum equipment, oil boom, generators, etc.
· Required to operate box truck and other heavy machinery after training.
· May assist with pollution prevention programs and sustainability education programs.
· May assist in performing pollution prevention and sustainability field surveys.
Desired Qualifications:
· Experience handling a variety of hazardous waste and the following skills-
· Performs routine and frequent heavy labor tasks related to on and off-site handling storage, packaging, transport and/or disposal of hazardous materials.
· Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling a variety of weighted containers.
· Operate box truck and other heavy machinery.
· Working in a team -oriented environment.
· Basic computer skills.
Working Environment:
· Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
· Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds 15 percent.
· Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
· Working in laboratories, shops, waste facilities and other hazardous locations.
· Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's degree and one (1) year of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Driving Requirement:
This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
