General Description

Our Scheduling and Authorization Specialist position is an essential component of our Patient Access team. The candidates we seek are patient oriented, have excellent communication skills (oral and written), enjoy taking initiative, work well within teams, and promote a positive work environment. Strong organizational & interpersonal skills are critical.

Essential Job Duties

  • Monitors the referrals & authorizations of upcoming outpatient procedures & surgical cases ensuring authorizations for surgeries are obtained in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Verifies patient demographic information, insurance eligibility, obtains authorization including coordination of benefits; updates and confirms necessary information to allow processing of claims to insurance plans.
  • Accurately completes outpatient procedure & surgical cost analysis form, documenting the required cost estimation for patient collection prior to services.
  • Follow up & document authorizations and progress of authorizations in the patients chart.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with physicians, patients, and co-workers and be capable of establishing good working relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Participate in providing ongoing training and education of staff as it relates to new processes to ensure timely confirmation of surgical cases.
  • Work with department manager to respond to and reduce complaints timely and professionally.
  • Assist surgery schedulers with STAT authorizations.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of all health records, member information and meet HIPAA guidelines.
  • Assists in identifying opportunities for improvement within the daily workflow process.
  • Attends department meetings as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in the healthcare field is required
  • Minimum one year in prior authorizations and Insurance verification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual/Spanish preferred

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting; must be able to stand/walk for most of the workday; heavy lifting, must be able to lift packages up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work paying close attention to detail with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to work in a fast pace environment
