Definition

(FULL-TIME & PART-TIME)
10 MONTH CONTRACT
Definition: Under general supervision from the Transportation Manager/Facilities Liaison, the School Bus Monitor works as a team player in ensuring the safety of children being transported on the school bus to and from school and extra-curricular activities in collaboration with the Bus Driver.

Examples of Tasks

Job Duties
  • Assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline on school bus; monitor and assist students while bus in is in operation
  • Assist school bus driver in assuring student safety; Early Childhood students are secured as required
  • Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students
  • Ensures student release protocols are followed per site guidelines/procedures
  • Assist children on and off the school bus and escort children across street upon return home; assures adult meets students leaving the bus.
  • Learn and adapt to each student's physical, communicative, and emotional needs
  • Communicate with school bus driver on a daily basis regarding student behavior and report student discipline problems to transportation manager
  • Assists the school bus driver on daily school bus walk through to assure no children are left on the school bus at the end of each route.
  • Assists the school bus driver with daily cleaning/disinfecting of school bus
  • Maintains student school bus list authorized by student transportation coordinator and maintains daily recordkeeping
  • Assists school bus driver with student seating chart and ensures the chart is current at all times
  • Assists school bus driver to assure fire extinguisher, body fluids kit, first aid kit, and seat belt cutters are properly labeled and secured in designated locations at all times.
  • Follows all Head Start guidelines for the safe operation of the school bus.
  • Attends in-service meeting and training courses as assigned
  • Follows emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Other Characteristics
A willingness to learn and understand:
  • The History, culture, traditions, and customs of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community

Knowledge of:
  • Safe practices concerning school bus transportation
  • Basic record-keeping techniques
  • Health and safety regulations

Skilled in:
  • Interacting with children ages two (2) to seventeen (17) years old
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with community agencies and departments, vendors, parents, volunteers, SRPMIC staff, and the general public
  • in working effectively on a team
  • Using a computer and MS Office Suite application software

Ability to:
  • Maintain proper records and documentation
  • Assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required
  • Understand and relate to children with special needs
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effectively working relationships with others
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures
  • Maintain routine records
  • Observe health and safety regulations
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds


Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required. Related transportation or working with students experience preferred. CPR/ First Aide Certificate is required to obtain within thirty (30) days of hire.

Special Requirements

Driving Requirement: This job description does not require the incumbent to drive; however, any employee who chooses or is asked to drive an SRPMIC vehicle for work related community business must receive authorization to do so. For clarification, work related community business includes driving to and from SRPMIC government sites and buildings.

Terms of Employment: This is a full-time non-exempt position scheduled for 40 hours per week.
Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment Drug Test and extensive Fingerprint and Background Check. Employee is Subject to Random Drug Testing and completion of a Background Check every five (5) years.

Employment preference is given in the following order:
1) Qualified Community Member 2) Qualified Native American, and 3) Other Qualified Applicant.
