Position Summary

Description:

The Prevention Research Center at the University of New Mexico is looking for a highly motivated and creative Scientific Research Manager to work with a multidisciplinary research team in the development, implementation and evaluation of social marketing campaigns for health promotion and disease prevention. Eat Smart to Play Hard (ESPH) is one of those social marketing campaigns funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program- Education (SNAP-Ed). ESPH works with children 8 - 11 years old and their families to support them in their healthy lives. The main goal is to make it convenient and fun for the children to eat more fruits and vegetables as a way to get to their goal of playing hard. Other social marketing initiatives developed at the Center are with teens and older adults.

As a member of the social marketing team, the successfulcandidate will:

  • Provide organizational leadership and coordination for SNAP-Ed social marketing field research projects involving state and federal agencies, school staff, community partners, vendors, and other external research entities.
  • Design and implement new research and program concepts, protocols, and procedures to reduce obesity and chronic related diseases, applying diversified knowledge of nutrition, social marketing, and relevant scientific principles, practices, and methods.
  • Maintain current knowledge in nutrition, social marketing, and graphic design since they will introduce and establish all relevant changes and adaptations to be current in the evidence-based approaches related to our research and programs.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data; plan, organize, and moderate focus groups; develop and administer surveys; complete data entry; prepare and submit abstracts and presentations for scientific conferences and other groups; and help prepare manuscripts for publication.
  • Prepare reports in the National Program Evaluation and Reporting System (N-PEARS) for SNAP-Ed funding.
  • Provide supervision and leadership to project staff and state coordinators engaged in the execution of SNAP-Ed programming and research using the SNAP-Ed Plan Guidance and Institutional Review Board (IRB) scientific research regulations and requirements.
  • Maintain relationships with community partners to implement SNAP-Ed programming, including field visits to elementary and middle schools, senior centers, and health community events throughout NM.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports, grant proposals, and community expert contracts and manage the SNAP-Ed tools, success stories, and resources for the national SNAP-Ed library.
  • Oversee and coordinate purchasing for program maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of the program's equipment, materials, and promotion; ensuring project compliance with food safety regulations and standards.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with community-engaged research
  • Experience working with rural communities in New Mexico.
  • Experience with nutrition education.
  • Experience in writing reports, grant proposals, and scientific journals.
  • Experience with social marketing.
  • Background in nutrition.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in diverse communities.
