Hourly Pay: $16.00
Estimated average hours per week: 29 - 40
This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.
These positions do not provide medical benefits

This is a front-line, customer-focused position responsible for public safety, natural resource education, and Aurora Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) rules and regulations education and compliance for the purpose of protecting and preserving natural resources, sites, and structures throughout the PROS system including reservoirs, trails, open space, and developed parks.

There are both Seasonal Part-Time and Seasonal Full-Time positions available.

Seasonal Part-Time: less than 30 hours per week for approximately 8-9 months February 1st -
November 31st

Seasonal Full Time: 40 hours per week for 6 months May 1st- October 31st

Both Part-time and Full-time positions will be expected of working weekends, early morning, late evening, and holiday shifts when required PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Seasonal Park Rangers serve PROS customers and Aurora residents by:

  • Performing daily operational requirements at assigned sites, which may include opening and closing facilities, securing buildings, cash handling, cash register operation, preparing revenue reports, maintenance operations, traffic control, Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) boat inspections and activity/patrol reporting following established policies and procedures.
  • Willing to relate in a positive way to the public while explaining park rules and regulations, state boating and wildlife regulations and city ordinances.
  • Provide information and directions to the public.
  • Investigate and resolve visitor complaints
  • Ensure public safety and the enjoyment of park areas through positive visitor contacts.
  • Perform rescue and/or first aid/CPR services to the public.
  • Perform patrol in assigned location(s) by foot, by vehicle, ATV, mountain bike, other off road transportation, and by boat.
  • Communicate effectively and coherently over ranger and emergency radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
  • Contacting customers or Aurora residents for violations of Aurora PROS rules and regulations when necessary. This may include investigating violations, issuing summonses - report writing and appearing in court.
  • Ability to issue summonses will be based upon a successful and demonstrated completion of specific training in this area as determined by a supervising ranger.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: College coursework and/or a BS/BA degree in Ecology, Biology, Fishery Management, or related degree is preferred. Preferred education and/or experience in customer service, natural resources, recreation, wildlife, fisheries, ecology, and experience making contacts regarding rules and regulations, motor boat operation and emergency medical response experience is desired.

Abilities: Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision outdoors under adverse weather conditions and work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to take on multiple assignments/tasks and remain professional with the public in sometimes difficult situations.

Skills: Excellent customer service and people skills are essential. Verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving, basic Microsoft Office programs functions and cash handling are necessary in order to complete the position as well.

Licenses, Certificates, and Equipment Required:

  • Motor Vehicle Record/License: Must provide a valid motor vehicle license.
  • Uniform items: Uniform will be provided. Seasonal Rangers are responsible for providing their own black work boots.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification: Previous or existing certifications desired, but not a must. Site-specific certification training is provided as part of seasonal ranger training.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: Heavy physical work which requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds with or without assistance, to handle emergency rescue operations; frequently lifting objects weighing 50 pounds with or without assistance. Considerable walking and standing on all types of terrain. Frequent performance of activities requiring a large amount of body movement including: bending, pushing, pulling, and climbing; considerable hand/eye coordination to operate power tools.

Work Environment: Frequently working outdoors with exposure to varying types of weather, dust, fumes.

Essential Personnel When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel

Equipment Used: Operates a city owned motor vehicle, all terrain vehicle, power boat, and power tools.
