Job Description

Job Title: Accountant Exemption Status: Exempt
Status: Full-time 40 hours per week

Department/Location: Catholic Cemeteries/Tucson, AZ

Primary Function: The accountant is responsible for daily bookkeeping functions of the accounting department, and for developing, maintaining, and monitoring the Cemeterys budget. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, "Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received." (Eph. 4:1)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs in support of the mission of the Diocese and the Catholic Church.
  • Abide by Catholic principles in the individuals professional and private life, and shall govern his/her professional and private life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate complete adherence to Catholic moral strictures
  • Record cash receipts: post journal entries and reconcile the general ledger investment account activity
  • Performs all bank reconciliations; reconcile financials with cemetery records
  • Reconciles monthly credit card activity report to bank activity and credit card slips
  • Maintains and oversees all petty cash funds
  • Analyze expenses and shop for savings
  • Maintain asset and vendor contract files
  • Process payments to vendors and others, maintain payable files
  • Track receivables for leased properties
  • Tracking of project expenditures
  • Prepare annual financial and other financial reports as necessary
  • Prepare operating and capital budgets for review and approval
  • Enters and transmits payroll data to the Diocese of Tucson
  • Maintains all payroll records and writes all payroll journal entries
  • Serves as main contact and works with the Diocese personnel and fiscal departments
  • Enforce adherence to current personnel policies and practices
  • Oversee financial aspects of cemetery and other cemetery related fundraisers
  • Work with financial auditors
  • Assist in preparation of Board meetings, committee meetings and special events
  • Coordinate Risk Management and Safety items with Safety Coordinator and Executive Director
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or his representative
Physical / Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in normal office environment.

Required Activities: Walking; sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; hearing, carrying; and keyboarding.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese and Catholic Church; be in full communion with the Church
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written; excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; adept at public speaking and possess presentation skills.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parishioners and the public
  • Flexibility in assessing needs and strategies; adapt appropriately in a ministerial environment
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; must be detail-oriented
  • Carries out all responsibilities with balance, empathy, sensitivity and patience, exercising prudent judgment in the application and interpretation of DOTCC personnel policies, practices, and procedures
  • Must be a self-starter; well organized; perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; punctuality is always a must; ability to travel locally as required; have a valid Arizona drivers license
  • A well-rounded business background to include business and financial controls experience
  • Proficiency in computer technology to include word-processing, spreadsheets and power point
  • Professional bearing; clean and neat personal appearance
  • Be able to work with volunteers
  • Ability to successfully pass a background, criminal history, and credit history check
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Business, Public Administration, a related field or equivalent with five years experience as an Accountant in a medium to large firm or equivalent experience or;
  • Masters degree in accounting, Business, Public Administration, a related field or equivalent with three years experience as an Accountant in a medium to large firm or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of automated accounting and payroll systems
Other/Preferred Skills:
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred
  • Type 50 WPM; proficient with 10 key calculators
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are Certified as Public Accountants or with a Masters degree in Business, Finance or Accounting.
