Job Description
Job Title: Senior Accountant Status: Full-time
Exemption Status: Exempt Salary Grade: 28
Department/Location: Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center/Tucson, AZ
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for day-to-day accounting functions for nine legal entities. A successful Senior Accountant combines excellent analytical skills with a thorough knowledge of accounting principles to analyze financial reports. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, "Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received." (Eph. 4:1)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform in support of the Church and the dioceses spiritual and pastoral mission.
  • Shall abide by Catholic principles in the employees professional and private life and shall govern his/her professional and private life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate complete adherence to Catholic moral structures.
  • Reconciles bank and investment statements, balance sheet account and other revenue and expense accounts as necessary.
  • Post all accounting transactions related to each legal entity including payroll and pension payments, benefits, contributions and special billings.
  • Oversee event management accounting.
  • Performs month-end and year-end close process.
  • Compiles monthly financial statements, Accounts Receivable reports and schedules of grants and endowments.
  • Assist with annual audits by preparing workpapers and answering questions.
  • Work with other managers and directors to review monthly financial reports.
  • Help ensure that all internal controls policies are followed.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by Controller or CFO.
Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal office environment.
Required Activities: Walking; sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; handling; hearing; carrying; and keyboarding.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Working knowledge of the Catholic Church including familiarity with its structures.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Highly proficient with spreadsheet software.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting software.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter, well-organized and a team player.
  • Able to travel on occasion.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to successfully complete a criminal history and background check.
  • Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible financial experience.
Other/Preferred Skills:
  • Preference will be given to those with a CPA or masters degree in business, Finance or Accounting
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
