CLASS SUMMARY:

The purpose of this position is to provide advanced, professional level accounting support to the Town, utilizing knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, bank and cash management principles, and industry standards and practices. Incumbent works with considerable independence and is assigned complex financial activities. Incumbent performs various complex and detailed accounting activities, including advanced research, analysis, and reconciliation of Town's bank and investment accounts; develops policies and procedures, including internal controls; and participates in special projects as assigned. Additionally, the Senior Accountant position may lead or supervise staff and/or oversee operational components in assigned area.

Examples of Duties

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

1. Participates in the accomplishment of organizational, departmental and division goals and objectives; monitors and evaluates the efficiency, effectiveness and accuracy of program operations, procedures, and use of resources; recommends and/or implements improvements as needed;

2. Assists with the preparation of the Town's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR); interacts with external auditors as deemed necessary;

3. Reconciles bank and investment accounts; maintains strong relationships with banking agencies; monitors daily bank balances and initiates account transfers as needed; reviews balances and daily activity; prepares required journal entries; identifies and resolves bank discrepancies;

4. Assists with internal and external reporting function; researches as needed; provides necessary documentation regarding financial transactions;

5. Performs complex financial analysis; prepares standard and ad hoc financial reports; develops, updates and implements policies, procedures pertaining to accounting functions;

6. Assists with the analysis and implementation of automated financial systems; provides guidance and assistance in the resolution of difficult accounting issues; interprets and resolves accounting problems identified by staff, auditor or other departments; clarifies accounting requirements, procedural needs and priorities;

7. Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Training and Experience (positions in this class typically require):

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and four years journey level experience in governmental accounting; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Master's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field preferred
