Position Description
Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) and adheres to official coding guidelines and the Values Based Culture of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Reviews official medical records with physician/healthcare provider documentation and assigns appropriate codes for all physician/healthcare provider services from current editions of official coding sources. Ensures accurate, complete, and timely code assignments for all physician/healthcare provider services to include procedural, diagnosis, and supplies in all places of service.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Responsible to audit and code the medical documentation for complete coding. Select and assign the appropriate level of service CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS and Modifier(s) to specialty medical documentation for outpatient and inpatient medical coding and billing timely filing.
  • Batch coded charges for daily data entry.
  • Review medical coding claim denials for correction and appeals as assigned by the business office, MPIP personnel in Centricity (C-BIZ) module Enterprise Task Manager (ETM) prior to filing deadline.
  • Assist with onboarding training for physicians, residents, non-physician practitioner (NPP) and coding staff on documentation and coding guidelines.
  • Assist and participate to conduct ongoing medical coding and reimbursement training and mentoring for documentation, coding regulations and guidelines to physicians, residents, medical students, NPPs and coding staff.
  • MPIP C-BIZ, Enterprise Task Manager (ETM) non coding denials related issues to other than coding and meeting timely deadlines.
  • All other duties as assigned by department supervisor, Unit Manager, and/or Director.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of HIPAA, Medicare and Medicaid guidelines and regulations evaluation and management coding guidelines in an academic teaching setting.
  • Knowledge of G.E. Centricity patient accounts, GE EMR and Cerner Electronic Medical Records (EMR) or Electronic Health Records (EHR) and patient accounting software systems.
  • Ability to participate with internal peer coding audit reviews.
  • Ability to communicate with physicians and other healthcare providers for documenting guidelines. Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication skills to mentor the coding staff and others.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish.

Required Qualifications
Education:
  • High School graduate or equivalency
Experience:
  • ???????Three years of coding and reimbursement experience, preferably in a physician group, hospital, or academic health care setting. Knowledge of the CPT, ICD-CM, ICD-10, and HCPCS nomenclature.
Certification:
  • Current coding certification from the American Associate of Professional Coders (AAPC) or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certification to remain current during term of employment.
