Reporting directly to the Executive VP, General Counsel & Compliance, the Compliance Senior Counsel will work remotely having the unique opportunity to help build out, lead and oversee the compliance function as well as the key compliance programs and initiatives of this rapidly-growing company. The Compliance Senior Counsel will provide strategic and tactical counsel to all US operations and management relating to regulatory requirements, including labor and employment, data privacy, and applicable consumer protection matters. As part of the Legal Department, the Compliance Senior Counsel will work with team members across multiple departments to uphold and develop standards and policies to reduce compliance risks, identify, investigate, and address all instances of alleged and actual non-compliance; as well as promote a culture of integrity throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in analysis and continued assessment of comprehensive framework for regulatory compliance and risk management
  • Develop/enhance, implement and maintain compliance programs and templates, including written policies, protocols and tracking system
  • Monitor developments in all areas of relevant regulatory compliance as well as federal, state and local jurisdiction laws and update policies and procedures accordingly
  • Anticipate and identify potential issues and needs of the company and develop and recommend solutions
  • Ensure company-wide adherence to labor compliance strategies
  • Conduct regular compliance audits to determine whether established protocols are being followed and where they can be improved
  • Assist avoiding legal challenges by understanding current and proposed legislation; enforcing regulations; recommending new procedures; complying with legal requirements
  • Support the development of and assist in providing company-wide training programs needed for compliance
  • Build relationships and partner with business leaders to ensure understanding of regulatory changes and compliance programs and to drive business-led compliance
  • Working closely with senior business people as a trusted advisor, while maintaining professional independence and judgment

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • J.D. (law degree) plus admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction required
  • 5+ years of related experience, including working inhouse, building and implementing corporate compliance programs
  • Extensive experience and understanding of state, local and federal policies
  • Experience in litigation is a plus
  • Experience in multifamily industry or recycling/waste regulatory compliance desired but not required

  • Energy and enthusiasm necessary to identify and develop projects from inception, and see them through to completion
  • Strong ability to influence others, and to anticipate and respond to different viewpoints
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple projects with a high level of effectiveness
  • Strong organizational skills and problem-solving ability; comfort with ambiguity
  • Ability to be proactive, self-motivated, self-directed, flexible, adaptable, and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds
  • Must be able to travel at least 10% of the time
