What Success Looks Like In This Job

The Senior Deputy District Attorney for Financial Crimes performs professional legal work in the prosecution of criminal cases in the 17th Judicial District, acting on behalf of the District Attorney and representing the People of the State of Colorado. The Senior Deputy District Attorney for Financial Crimes will help lead a team that prosecutes complex financial crimes against persons, at-risk persons, and businesses and seeks to increase public awareness about avoiding scams and financial crimes. Attorneys in this category have consistently demonstrated the experience and competence necessary to handle first chair/lead prosecutor responsibilities on any type of criminal case, regardless of complexity.

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to seeking justice, preserving community safety and making the criminal justice system better
  • Represent the 17th Judicial District and District Attorney using professionalism and integrity in dealing with court officials, witnesses, members of the legal community and the general public.
  • Perform the duties of a District Court prosecutor, including preparing and conducting jury trials on high level felony offenses
  • Maintain a large caseload of felony cases and perform all necessary duties to shepherd the cases through the criminal justice system, including making appropriate plea offers, working with victims, preparing witnesses, collaborating with law enforcement and interacting with defense attorneys.
  • Serve as a leader and mentor in the office, particularly with less-experienced attorneys
  • Establish, nurture and improve relationships between the District Attorneys Office and the community
  • Confer with the District Attorney and Assistant District Attorneys regarding the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and units for the DAs Office
  • Demonstrate leadership to improve and strengthen the units and teams within the District Attorneys Office
  • Serve as a liaison to law enforcement agencies within the 17th Judicial District Attorney
  • Provide, on a scheduled basis, off-hour and on-call services to police agencies requiring assistance during nights and weekends
  • Serve on various "on-call" teams within the office, such as Homicide On-Call, Vehicular Homicide On-Call and others as designated
Qualifications for Success

TO BE SUCCESSFUL, OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the duties, powers, limitations and authorities of the District Attorneys Office and related law enforcement or criminal justice agencies
  • Significant experience prosecuting high level felony cases, particularly complex financial crimes and elder exploitation cases, from their inception to jury trial, sentencing and post-conviction litigation
  • Knowledge of established precedents, case law and sources of legal reference applicable to the activities of assigned specialized area and the District Attorneys Office
  • Knowledge of criminal law and procedure, rules of evidence, and advanced principles of litigation, trial and hearing procedures
  • Knowledge of ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional standards and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations
  • Commitment to working collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability and experience to manage and resolve complex criminal prosecutions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to meet statutory deadlines
  • Must have proficiency in current computer software programs
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, court officials, law enforcement and the community

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
  • Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school
  • Seven (7) years minimum experience as prosecuting attorney in the State of Colorado or another State is required.
  • Experience with complex financial crimes and elder exploitation cases is required
  • Must be a licensed attorney permitted to practice law in the State of Colorado.
