POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Attorneys Office of the Arizona Supreme Court is hiring a Senior Staff Attorney.

The Staff Attorneys Office is comprised of ten attorneys and two legal assistants dedicated to providing the highest quality support to the seven justices of the Arizona Supreme Court, primarily in their adjudicative role but also in carrying out their rulemaking and case administration responsibilities.

This positions essential function consists of reviewing cases subject to the Courts discretionary jurisdiction and researching, analyzing, and drafting timely memoranda about those cases. Senior Staff Attorneys similarly assist the Court on criminal and civil appeals, motions, certified questions, miscellaneous petitions, court rule amendments, and attorney admission and discipline cases. They also advise the duty justice on motions for stay and other matters; draft orders for the Courts approval; proofread memoranda; staff and serve on court committees as assigned; and interact with and assist the justices, their judicial assistants, their clerks, and the Clerks Office on all aspects of case administration and improving the Courts judicial operations. Although telecommuting has been temporarily implemented to comport with CDC guidelines, Staff Attorneys are expected to work onsite during regular Court hours.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires a juris doctorate from an A.B.A.-accredited law school and membership in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona. In addition, this position requires at least five years of experience in the active practice of law; a thorough understanding of the application of pertinent constitutional, statutory, regulatory law, and rules; the ability to distinguish legal issues from advocacy and analyze difficult and complex legal problems; and the ability to draft timely memoranda and to discuss the same as needed.

This position also requires excellent legal research, writing, and editing skills; oral and written advocacy; time management skills; interpersonal skills; organizational skills, and basic computer skills (including Microsoft Word and Outlook). It also requires the ability to address time-sensitive matters which may include working evenings and weekends; and a willingness to abide by strict security and confidentiality rules and policies and the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration.

The preferred candidate will have at least five years of litigation experience or similar experience in civil, criminal, death penalty, disciplinary, or administrative court tribunals involving research and analysis of complex legal and constitutional issues.

Travel level: negligible.
