Job Description

Arizona State University (ASU) is looking for an experienced fabrication shop or makerspace manager to help relaunch and manage a 17,000 sq. ft. fabrication shop space at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center in downtown Chandler. 

 

The ASU Chandler Innovation Center fabrication shop is being reopened as a university-wide resource available to ASU students, faculty, staff and affiliates for work on ASU projects starting Fall 2023. The fabrication shop contains a wood shop, metal shop, MIG and TIG welding, machine shop, sewing, 3D printing, laser cutting, and several 2D and 3D design workstations. The shop is part of a 33,297 sq. ft. facility featuring flexible use classroom, meeting, event and office space. 

The Shop Manager oversees the daily operations of the fabrication shop in a manner which prioritizes both safety and customer service, creating an environment which encourages and supports users in completing their projects, removing barriers to using the space. 

Responsibilities include supporting use of the facility by ASU students, faculty, staff and affiliates, ensuring the shop and shop equipment are well maintained, instructing classes on fabrication equipment, mentoring users on the creation of their projects, and supervising shop users and staff. 

Successful candidates are self-motivated, hands-on managers who prioritize supporting the safety and success of shop users. Successful candidates also take the initiative to get things done and are able to adapt to changing priorities. 

 

The Shop Manager is part of a small team managing the facility’s operations, reporting to the Operations Manager Sr., and works regularly with facility users. Working hours are generally Monday through Saturday, 8am-5pm or 12pm - 9pm

 

Salary Range

$70,000 - $78,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

Manages the daily operations of the fabrication shop:

·       Maintains a clean and organized shop

·       Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates and plans work for student employees and staff

·       Manages inventory of raw materials and supplies, equipment supplies and tooling supplies

·       Analyzes requirements for staffing, equipment, operating expenses and training

·       Prepares regular activity reports on shop use

·       Serves on the Shop Advisory Committee

·       Performs other duties as assigned

Maintains high safety and environmental standards:

·       Creates, maintains, and updates shop safety standards, documentation and training

·       Ensures safety equipment is operational and that all ASU Environmental, Health and Safety and OSHA safety protocols are adhered to

·       Develops and implements policies and procedures in support of a safe operating environment which encourages rather than discourages use

Instructs safety and equipment classes:

·       Instructs and demonstrates skill in the following areas:

·       Wood working including CNC routing

·       Plastics including laser cutting, vacuum forming, machining

·       Welding including MIG and TIG of both steel and aluminum

·       Machining processes including vertical milling, metal lathe, CNC machining

·       Metal manufacturing techniques including metal cutting, bending, and rolling.

·       Sewing and textiles including upholstery, screen printing, pattern making

·       3D modeling and printing including CAD design and machine operation

·       Finishing work including powder coating and painting

·       Electronics including soldering, testing, and programming

·       Regularly schedules and instructs 3 safety and/or operational classes per day

·       Certifies individuals for use of the facility and equipment, updates user permissions in the scheduling system

Maintains shop equipment, tools and supplies:

·       Maintains all shop tools and equipment in working condition

·       Troubleshoots equipment failures and implements repairs

·       Maintains inventory of shop supplies and materials store, advises on products to stock

·       Maintains inventory of tools

·       Tracks and monitors equipment and maintenance expenses

Supports the user experience with a high level of customer service:

·       Prepares equipment, tools and supplies for user equipment reservations

·       Facilitates storage of short term and long term projects

·       Mentors shop space users 1:1 to assist with fabrication of their project

·       Demonstrates customer service focused leadership

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Business Administration, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Construction Management or related field AND five years construction or maintenance experience which includes one year supervisory experience; OR Nine years construction/maintenance experience which includes one year supervisory experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

 

Desired Qualifications

·       Demonstrated knowledge in at least two traditional equipment subject areas:

·       Machining

·       Woodworking

·       Metalworking

·       Electronics

·       Textiles

·       Demonstrated knowledge in at least one digital fabrication subject area:

·       Laser cutting

·       3D printing

·       CNC routing

·       CNC machining

·       Demonstrated knowledge of both 2D design and 3D CAD software

·       Experience instructing safety and basic use fabrication classes as well as advanced skill based workshops

·       Experience in customer service, hospitality, or retail environment (1 year)

·       Evidence of servant leadership and customer service based approach to mentoring users and creating shop policies

·       Demonstrated knowledge of shop organization systems, cleanliness, and maintenance. 

·       Experience creating budgets, tracking expenses, preparing reports

·       Evidence of effective communication skill

 

Working Environment

·       Onsite work at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center (ACIC) is required.

·       Requires a flexible working schedule in order to accommodate scheduled use of the shop which will include evenings and weekends.

·       Work duties are performed in an environmentally controlled shop setting.

·       Activities include use of office equipment including a laptop computer and shop equipment including complex and heavy machinery.

·       Subject to extended periods of standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds.

·       Some travel to other campus locations may be required.

·       Regular communication to perform essential duties
