Title VI (Indian Education) and McKinney Vento (Homeless) Sub Grant Funded

JOB SUMMARY

The SPSS works specifically with PK-8 Title VI and MV eligible students at school campuses. The focus of the SPSS is to be an additional support to existing school staff who assist special populations students at school sites. The goal of the SPSS is to ensure students are enrolled in school, attend school regularly, have their basic needs met and show social and academic growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Professional Knowledge

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Federal guidelines of Title VI and McKinney-Vento Statutes
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the unique needs of Indian Education Students and students experiencing homelessness.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of child development

Instructional Practice

  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of students and families.
  • Flexibility of scheduling required. Travel to multiple school sites in a day may be required.
  • Communicate effectively with school staff, parents and students.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, classroom teachers and Special Populations Coordinator to prioritize eligible students most in need of support.
  • Conduct various activities with students such as: student check-in/check-out, small groups, reading partner, homework helper, lunch buddy, playground shadow, escort to/from MV transportation and other activities as recommended by school staff.
  • Maintains documentation of student contacts, communications with families and supplies provided

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular attendance
  • Support the Special Populations Coordinator with activities such as, but not limited to: Indian Education Summer Enrichment Program, monthly/quarterly parent meetings, enrollment in Indian Education Program, Home/shelter visits, organization and distribution of supplies to schools and families.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, support staff, special education staff, office staff and transportation staff on a daily basis.
  • Coordinate enrichment opportunities for students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates Degree Required or equivalent of two (2) years college education (60 Semester Hours)
  • Prefer prior experience working with children.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships, and work cooperatively with students, peers, and parents.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Governing Board policies.
  • Ability to write objective, articulate reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, and staff.
  • Prefer Bilingual in Spanish.

Occasionally the employee will lift up to 10 lbs. such as to lift files and paper.

This position is a grade 8 on the Support Staff Salary Schedule. Placement on the schedule is between $13.69 and $15.11, depending on experience.
