Position Description
Employees in this position generally assist the head nurse in the supervision of other clinic personnel and may substitute for this person in the event of his/her absence. May supervise and instruct subordinate nursing personnel. Receives supervision from head nurse or physician, functions independently within guidelines. May supervise ancillary nursing personnel in the performance of certain tasks, and assists in training personnel. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Will assist the Head Nurse in the daily management and oversight of efficient clinic operations , specifically with the nursing staff and medical assistants.in the clinic setting. Handles any issues that arise, as needed. Review clinic schedules and staff assignments. Will ensure appropriate coverage for all service lines.
  • Oversees and ensures that all patients are prepared for exams, takes history, VS, Ht, Wt, assesses reason for visit, and documents in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), accordingly. Will schedule EMR and RMS training as necessary
  • Will assist Head Nurse in overseeing that all necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, specialty and minor procedures are available and will assists physicians in the procedures. Will conduct a skills fair and assessment of competencies on an annual basis.
  • Administers medications as instructed, noting side effects and contraindications to pt. and documents in EMR. Will conduct or arrange annual training for CMA's to ensure proficiency in administration of medications, to include proper labeling or patient education.
  • Obtains specimen for laboratory tests and prepares paperwork as needed. Documents in EMR as required. Will provide training on an annual basis to ensure proper labeling of all specimens in accordance with Joint Commission standards.
  • Provides patient education on procedures, dressing changes, for care at home. Ensure staff is trained on the various procedures done in their service line and oriented to the proper education of the patients.
  • Responsible for supervision of staff in the clinic area, to include but not limited to Clinical Assistants, LVN's. Will work in conjunction with the Head Nurse to assist in recruiting new staff evaluations disciplinary actions, staff meetings, etc.
  • Assist the Head Nurse in assuring that clinic equipment is operational and supervises the operation of specialized equipment. Also, responsible for ensuring the care and maintenance of this equipment. Provides training to staff, as necessary in the use of equipment.
  • Assist the Head Nurse in providing in-service training to existing and new clinical staff. Ensures new and current staff comply with all TTUHSC mandatory trainings and competencies tests.
  • Ensures inventory of necessary supplies, medications, and equipment. Ensures equipment is maintained for diagnostic and treatment procedures. Woks with the Clinic Manager in the ordering of equipment and its subsequent inspection. Also, responsible for ensuring exam/procedure rooms are clean and stocked with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Addresses patient complaints or issues, concerning health problems, treatments, etc. Offers instructions and ensures that the situation is corrected or refers to appropriate personnel.
  • Oversees the screening of incoming patient telephone calls to determine urgency of situation and what action should be taken. Oversees all medical calls. Ensures that all CMA's have telephone system and are appropriately addressing the messages in the pool.
  • Attends supervisory and administrative staff meetings to discuss unit operations and staff training on an as needed basis. Will Assist the Head Nurse in manual and policy development.

  • Excellent supervisory skills, excellent customer service skills-people person, BSN and management related background. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish. Advance level computer skills. Experienced in EMR (Electronic Medical Records) process. Experience in Joint Commission process. Experience in developing and writing policies. Bilingual: English and Spanish

Required Qualifications
Graduate from an approved accredited nursing program; current RN license in the State of Texas or have the ability to transfer license to Texas. Two years of Registered Nurse experience in a specialty area.
