Under supervision, the Staff Research Associate will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in performing experiments aimed at developing imaging, computational, cellular, and molecular tools to investigate fundamental mechanisms of cell biology in disease, with a particular focus on neurodegeneration and hearing loss. Research will include the study of hearing loss, inner ear sensory hair cells, neurons, Murine models of hearing loss and neurodegenerative disorders.
The incumbent will be responsible for performing hearing testing in animal models, dissection, staining and imaging tissues, mass spectrometry, immunoprecipitation, image analysis, and various cellular and molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, recombination-based cDNA cloning, bacterial transformation and growth, protein purification, Western-blotting, cell and biochemistry, microscopy, cell cultures, and imaging techniques. Incumbent will be responsible for performing general lab support and maintenance, preparing standard media and solutions, assisting with inventory, stocking and organizing supplies, general cleaning and upkeep, and adherence to all safety protocols. Participation in laboratory meetings and journal discussions is also required. Incumbent may receive task direction from senior level researchers. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSTheoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques, acquired through a Bachelors degree in biology or related field; and/or equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
Experience with various cellular and molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, recombination-based cDNA cloning, PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, molecular genetic assays, bacterial transformation and growth, protein purification, Western-blotting, cell and biochemistry, microscopy, cell cultures, and imaging techniques.
Experience in the preparation of scientific reagents including common buffers and stock solutions
Knowledge and experience with basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, micro-pipettes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and microscopes
Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements including the ability to discuss and understand day-to-day laboratory affairs, research plans, results and ideas with PI and other lab personnel in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, follow written and oral protocols and give oral presentations on the progress of research in lab meetings. Proven ability to prioritize and schedule experiments and duties to maximize efficiency.
*Proven ability to develop, follow and troubleshoot established lab protocols and lab procedures with direction from PI.
Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and associated word processing and spreadsheet software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to the preparation and editing of scientific papers, manuscripts, and lab data. Experience presenting research to formal audience.
Proven knowledge of MSDS's (Material Data Safety Sheets) and the hazard communication and Injury and Illness and Prevention Program (IIPP). Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing, safe handling of chemicals, and the use of protective items.
A strong desire to work as part of a collaborative team with defined project timelines.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
Experience with confocal microscopy, immunostaining, and fluorescent in-situ hybridization. Experience with image analysis and quantification.
Knowledge of Murine models of loss and neurodegenerative disorders. Experience with hearing testing in animal models.
Experience with tissue & cell culture, transfections, dissection, staining and imaging tissues.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in researching information and analyzing data to arrive at valid conclusions.
Ability to learn and carry out new experimental procedures with accuracy and efficiency. Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and/or written protocols, including follow-up on previously begun procedures.
Demonstrated ability to record data accurately and enter into appropriate medium.
Knowledge of Tissue and cell processing for mass spectrometry. Experience conducting immunoprecipitation experiments for mass spectrometry protein interactions.
Sensitivity to the needs of laboratory animals in compliance to AAALAC standards.
Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
Must be willing to work an adjusted schedule to support research needs.
Successful completion of pre-employment background check.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
