Position Summary

The University of New Mexico (UNM) Office of Sustainability was established as a standalone directorate in Institutional Support Services in 2024. A core need for the office is Communications & Outreach to the campus community and off-campus stakeholders to build the culture of sustainability and educate about campus sustainability efforts. This includes engaging students, staff, faculty, and university stakeholders in UNMs sustainability efforts via the website and social media postings, writing and placing news stories, planning and staffing events, creating marketing and education campaigns for specific sustainability topics, developing a newsletter and contact database, supervising student employees working on sustainability programming, and other projects that engage the greater campus community.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate communications strategies tailored to internal and external stakeholders to grow visibility of UNM sustainability.
  • Lead content creation and marketing communications for the Office of Sustainability.
  • Cultivate, write, and edit sustainability highlights.
  • Develop graphics, presentations, and other visual content. Assist with design/layout and editing of documents and marketing materials.
  • Create, manage and sustain an impactful digital presence through website content, social media content, and digital signage for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Produce Office of Sustainability newsletter and email marketing initiatives; create and maintain Office of Sustainability listserv.
  • Supervise student employees working on sustainability engagement projects.
  • Plan and lead regular and special events related to sustainability.
  • Track metrics to determine success of outreach and communications.
  • Collaborate with ISS and UCAM teams to coordinate communication and dissemination efforts, adhere to UNM Brand standards, and contribute to the broader University communication efforts.
  • Collaborate with UNM students and classes to find creative ways to enhance Office of Sustainability communications streams while providing a valuable educational experience.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental sustainability and experience working with sustainability or environmental programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Event planning and execution skills.
  • Visual communication design skills.
  • Website design knowledge: Cascade knowledge a plus.
  • Willingness and energy to interface with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders while representing the Office of Sustainability at university events, including tabling at campus activity fairs.
  • The ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other individuals and volunteer groups.
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with and present to those of other cultures or backgrounds.
