Summary: Under general supervision, incumbent(s) perform one or more of the skilled trades functions such as carpentry, locksmith, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, welding, etc. Duties may include repair work, grounds maintenance and building maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs one or more of the skilled trades functions such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, welding, etc. in performing repair work, preventive maintenance, grounds maintenance and building maintenance. Duties might include one or more of the following: welding materials according to specifications; unclogging drains and ensuring proper flow of sewage; repairing/replacing refrigeration units and swamp coolers; repairing/replacing motors, boilers, pumps and controllers; repairing/replacing gas lines and pipes; repairing/replacing /building doors, walls and ceilings; fabricating and installing cabinetry and counters; designing and maintaining water and control systems for landscaping; and, performing electrical duties such as rewiring and wiring new areas.
  • Inspects jobs in order to determine scope of work including inspecting the area/item needing repair, determining amount of work needed and materials necessary and the number of hours needed to complete the job.
  • Maintains daily logs by recording job type, materials and equipment used and the number of labor hours used in job completion. Meets with maintenance lead daily to discuss priorities, job status, job details and any last minute changes.
  • Performs cleanup at the end of the day or when the job is completed including cleaning up paint spills, picking up tools, cleaning area where job was completed and performing touch up work as needed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment used in skilled trades function including cleaning, oiling and storing properly.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications. Verification of these required qualifications is necessary.

  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) and five years journey level experience in area of assignment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Must have all certificates and licenses pertaining to area of assignment.

  • Reading and understanding technical manuals, blueprints and schematics;
  • Creating schematics for work completed;
  • Interpersonal communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, etc. to exchange information.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
