The Traffic Division is responsible for daily operation and maintenance of traffic control devices such as traffic signals, traffic control signs, and pavement markings. They are looking for a Traffic Technician who will perform skilled manual and technical work involved in the control, maintenance, and operation of the City traffic control system and assist with work planning by scheduling, organizing, and securing materials and equipment for the accomplishment of assigned tasks.
- Preparing traffic signal timing programming including implementation and field observation
- Developing and testing advanced traffic signal programming and electronics/circuit testing
- Processing traffic signal timing information requests as needed
- Reviewing plan submittals to ensure compliance with City and other relevant traffic engineering standards
- Coordinating with contractors, developers, City and other government agencies regarding traffic control and other traffic engineering items
- Performing engineering drafting and design functions related to traffic engineering items
- Scheduling, attending, and conducting meetings as needed; conducting investigations of traffic conditions
- Conducting and analyzing traffic surveys and other studies relating to traffic movement; making recommendations for installation or modification of traffic control devices including also electric, electronic, and mechanical components
- Preparing work orders for installation or modification of traffic control devices
- Responding to public concerns related to traffic issues
- Performing field measurements; and performing additional duties as assigned
- May lead the work of lower level engineering technician/assistant/specialist staff
- May perform additional duties as assigned
Education: Associate's degree in Civil Engineering or directly related field.
Experience:
At least 1 year progressively responsible technical, paraprofessional, or professional engineering experience
At least 1 year progressively responsible technical, paraprofessional, or professional engineering experience, including at least 6 years in traffic related areas preferred
At least 4 years' experience traffic signal controller or other relevant traffic engineering software preferred
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of traffic control devices and related electronics and circuits, practices and procedures as defined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Knowledge of the basic principles of civil engineering; municipal design criteria and specifications; traffic engineering software as well as standard word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications; and review, correct, and recommend solutions to complex engineering plans
Skills: Strong analytical and interpersonal skills; skill in computers and related software
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
Colorado driver's license with a good driving history
Certification through ATSSA as a Traffic Control Supervisor and/or through IMSA as a Bench Technician and/or Field Electrician (minimum Level II, Level III preferred) preferred
Physical Demands: Light to sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; occasional lifting and carrying; some walking and standing for field work and meetings; vision to read and interpret reports, circuit diagrams, schematics and wiring diagrams, and other written documents as well as produce design work; hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard and related equipment; hand/foot/eye coordination to operate motor vehicle; frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
- Operates a motor vehicle; survey equipment; measuring equipment such as tapes, levels and micrometers, camera and personal computer.
- This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
