Ultrasound Tech, Per Diem, Day Shift, No Weekends, No Holidays

I. Position Function:

Utilize high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical diagnosis.

Produce and evaluate ultrasound images and related data to assist the physician to render a medical diagnosis.

II. Job Relationships:

Reports to Chief of Department and MFM Administrator.

Discusses departmental concerns with the administrator of Maternal-fetal Medicine.

Discusses patient care issues with physicians, nurse midwives and nurses.

Communicates with the office manager and receptionist regarding patient scheduling matters and patient flow.

III. Authority:

Possesses the authority to request confidential patient information.

Implements necessary changes in the daily schedule to accommodate emergency "add ons" from patient floors, physician's offices, or hospital transfers.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Obtain, review, and bring together pertinent patient history, physical examination, and supporting clinical data to facilitate diagnostic results.

Perform specialized obstetrical ultrasound examinations including but not limited to:

- Biophysical Profiles

- Level II ultrasound examinations

- Fetal Echocardiography

- Fetal Doppler examinations

- Transabdominal and transvaginal examinations

Perform diagnostic procedures in high risk obstetrical ultrasound and assist in fluid aspiration procedures including but not limited to :

- Amniocentesis (Infusion, Reductions)

- Percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS)

- Fetal blood transfusions

Perform diagnostic procedures by producing, assessing, and evaluating ultrasound images and related data that are used by physicians to render a medical diagnosis.

Provide interpreting physicians with an oral or written summary of technical findings.

Attend yearly symposiums in ultrasound to maintain professional certification and to keep abreast of current trends in the fields.

Orders supplies necessary for job function.

Schedules preventative maintenance on equipment and recognized faulty equipment, keeps equipment clean.

Takes responsibility for smooth patient flow through the ultrasound unit. This includes overseeing patient scheduling.

Maintains necessary records including, but not limited to, log books, records, films, tapes, reports and pictures.

Participate in teaching programs for residents, interns, medical students, nursing students and others.

Provide patient and public education and promote principles of good health.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Reports on a daily basis with scheduled physician with regards to patient care.

Shares any concerns at the monthly staff meetings.

Notifies the Administrator of any incidents representing potential or actual situations relating to patient care or safety.

Handles situations accordingly in absence of MFM Administrator.

VI. Accountability:

Accountable for performing the best quality ultrasound examination possible, maintaining patient confidentiality, and abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Graduate of an AMA approved ultrasound program.

Allied Health background preferred.

Minimum Experience:

1-3 years experience in high risk obstetrical ultrasound.

Minimum skills/abilities:

Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Interpersonal skills sufficient to satisfactorily explain examinations to patients.

Certification/Licensure:

Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in OB/GYN.

Registered in OB/GYN.

Training:

1-3 years of training in a high risk obstetrical ultrasound department.

Special Qualifications:

High degree of courtesy and tact required in regular contact with patients and their families involving patient related information of a sensitive and/r confidential nature.

Computer literacy a must.
