  • Determine appropriate and competitive premium levels for BCBSAZ new and existing local group business.

    Level 1

    • Determine new and renewal premium rates based on an accurate and complete analysis of pertinent data using approved underwriting procedures and company guidelines. Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
    • Produce and maintain documentation to support underwriting recommendations and rate calculations
    • Assist in training of sales representatives and brokers
    • Communicate with internal stakeholders regarding renewals and prospective bids
    • Assist in the development and implementation of new products and participate on small-scale projects
    • Review and approve experience reports for retention accounting and retrospectively rated groups
    • Review group master contract language and provide rate information to Legal as required
    • Obtain required approvals for external calculations from Level 3 Underwriter or management prior to distribution

    Level 2

    • Provide analysis and recommendations for more complex groups and rating scenarios
    • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders regarding renewals and prospective bids
    • Demonstrate independent decision making and perform essential functions with minimal supervision

    Level 3

    • Provide analysis and recommendations for advanced rating scenarios and groups
    • Participate / lead medium to large projects to implementation according to project plans
    • Review and approve calculations completed by Level 1 Underwriters
    • Mentor Levels 1 and 2 Underwriters
    • Assist underwriting management with training

    ALL LEVELS

  • Each progressive level includes the ability to perform the essential functions of any lower levels and mentor employees in those levels.
  • The position requires a full-time work schedule. Full-time is defined as working at least 40 hours per week, plus any additional hours as requested or as needed to meet business requirements.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Level 1- 1 year Experience working with MS Word and Excel

1 year Experience in mathematics, statistics, or business

Level 2-2 years Experience working with MS Word and Excel

3 years Experience in mathematics, statistics, or business

1 year Project management experience

Level 3- 4 years Experience working with MS Word and Excel

5 years Experience in mathematics, statistics, or business

2 years Project management experience

2 years Experience as an underwriter or actuarial analyst

Required Education

  • High-School Diploma or GED in general field of study (Applies to All Levels)

Preferred Work Experience:

Level 1- 2 year Experience working with MS Word and Excel

2 year Experience in mathematics, statistics, or business

1 year Project management experience

1 years Experience as a group health underwriter or actuarial analyst

Level 2-5 years Experience working with MS Word and Excel

Level 3- 7 years Experience working with MS Word and Excel

Preferred Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in business, mathematics, statistics, or related field of study. (Applies to All Levels)
Preferred Licenses
  • Active, current, and unrestricted AZ Department of Insurance Life & Health Insurance License
Required Job Skills
  • Intermediate skill in use of office equipment, including copiers, fax machines, scanners and telephones (all levels)
  • Intermediate PC proficiency (all levels)
  • Basic proficiency in Excel, Word, and Access software (level 1)
  • Intermediate proficiency in Excel, Word, and Access software (level 2)
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, and Access software and programming (level 3)
  • Basic knowledge of underwriting principles, guidelines, and methodologies
  • Intermediate skill in mathematics and statistics
  • General knowledge of the healthcare industry
  • Knowledge of health benefit design and rating techniques

  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy
  • Communicate professionally to both internal and external customers.
  • Prioritize tasks and work with multiple priorities, sometimes under limited time constraints
  • Solve problems independently and draw accurate conclusions from limited data using basic underwriting techniques.
  • Analytical knowledge necessary to generate reports based on available data and then make sound decisions based on reported data
