Vet Tech II - SMPC

POSITION SUMMARY: The Veterinary Technician will provide a consistent, positive customer experience to clients and patients in a compassionate, empathetic manner. Assist the veterinarians and technicians in all aspects of the AHS clinics including front and back office duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Check in/check out patients for surgery.
  2. Assist veterinarians and technicians in exams, surgery, surgical recovery, sick care, and preventive wellness care of patients. Enter all medical notes and client contact into computer.
  3. Able to confidently perform anesthesia, prep, fluid therapy, laboratory procedures, injections and medication. Maintain surgery/drug logs and data entry into database.
  4. Proficient with front desk reception activities, such as answering multiple phone lines, filing, money handling, computer and customer service skills. Assist front as needed. Relay all notes to veterinarian.
  5. Assist with shelter animals' care and treatments when needed.
  6. Assist with owner requested euthanasia and aftercare.
  7. Assist in education of clients and other staff members. Intake and discharge patients.
  8. Keep all clinic areas clean and orderly. Restock supplies as needed. Clean and maintain equipment.
  9. Assist with grants and gifts case reporting.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma OR equivalent experience.
  2. Prefer completion of 2 year Associates Veterinarian Technician program.
  3. Certification preferred but not required.
  4. Strong animal handling skills.
  5. Minimum of 2 years' experience as a working Veterinary Technician or Assistant.
  6. Must know phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, pharmacology, endocrinology, anesthesiology, surgical assisting, animal handling, and anatomy and physiology.
  7. Able to pay attention to details and complete paperwork quickly and accurately

Language Skills: Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language helpful.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Proficiency with or able to learn/use Infinity, Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment).

Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance. Access to reliable transportation. The person in this position interacts daily with the public, clinic staff and other shelter personnel.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; occasional wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
