Position Description
Serves as Back-up Veterinarian for the Institutional/ Attending Veterinarian for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases of laboratory animals to ensure health of animals used in scientific research and to comply with regulations governing their humane and ethical treatment by performing the following duties.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Respond to emergency health matters and provide veterinary care or recommendations for veterinary care or euthanasia at the request of the local vivarium technician(s)/staff, Institutional/ Attending Veterinarian and research staff. Provide approvals for animal or drug orders. This includes weekends and holidays when the Institutional Veterinarian is out of town.
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance with NIH guidelines, Federal and state regulations, AAALAC standards for all research and teaching animals maintained by TTUHSC El Paso.
  • Follows through on all duties assigned.

Occasional Duties
  • Maintain communication with Institutional/Attending Veterinarian or designee on an as-needed basis to discuss issues related to the LARC and for training. Provide weekly walk-throughs of the animal facility.
  • Suspend animal use, and if necessary, quarantine animals when deemed in the best interest of the animal(s).
  • Attend monthly IACUC meetings and semi-annual inspections, as needed, to keep abreast of issues in the laboratory animal world and on matter at TTUHSC EP.
  • Maintain all required training, including CITI and other required TTUHSC training.
  • Maintain enrollment in the Occupational Health program.

Keep current on CITI training and other required TTUHSC training.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Licensed to Practice in the State of Texas or
  • Capable of taking and passing state Exam.
  • Must have practiced experience in Lab Animal Medicine.
