*THIS IS A GRANT FUNDED POSITION*
Under close supervision by the Group Home Supervisor in the Social Services Department, cares for the needs of the residents of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Group Homes and provides services, supervision and security throughout the overnight hours. Promotes positive behaviors and develops resistance skills in children and adolescents in the group homes at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.

Examples of Tasks

Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. Tasks:
1. Supervises youth residents and performs bed checks at least three times per hour (variable times). Records youth bed check information and times.

2. Prepares breakfast for residents. Supervises residents while they are preparing, eating and cleaning up after meals. Engages in discussion with residents. Advises and counsels residents in matters of attitude and behavior. Supervises morning preparations for school or other activities of residents.

3. Provides care and supervision during after school hours and on weekends. Provides service, supervision and security throughout the night hours in-residence at the Group Homes.

4. Writes reports as directed. Maintains logs and records. Attends in-service training and staff meetings as directed. Confers with supervisor on a regular basis.

5. Monitors and dispenses medication as required and authorized. Maintains medical treatment log.

6. Establishes and maintains an environment that encourages teamwork, interdependence and ethical behavior.

7. Drives Tribal vehicle (15-passenger van or car) to transport residents to locations on and off the reservation.

8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance program and departmental operation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge at a basic level of social work principles, concepts, methods and techniques as well as crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws, rules, regulations and standards that apply to public social service programs and public prevention programs, particularly juvenile and child care codes.
  • Knowledge and practical application skills in community based prevention and intervention programs related to drugs, alcohol, violence and gangs.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures including those associated with the confidential and sensitive information found in client records.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations, policies and procedures of the group homes and Youth Services Division.

  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with residents and their families.
  • Skill with on-the-spot crisis management counseling with individuals, groups and families.
  • Skill in crisis intervention.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with SRPMIC co-workers, multiple agencies, other service providers and the public.
  • Skill operating a variety of standard office equipment including photocopiers, fax machines, personal computers and related software in order to fulfill job requirements.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely program records according to prescribed standards.
  • Ability to make independent decisions related to client care and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to prepare food and serve meals.
  • Ability to drive various SRPMIC vehicles, particularly a 15 passenger van.
  • Ability to work non-standard work hours (for example 10 PM - 8 PM) as directed by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and experience equivalent to two (2) years of full-time youth program work.

  • For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED within the probationary period. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered. Special Requirements

Requires overnight home care work within the Group Homes.

  • Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of this position, successful completion of an extensive background investigation may be required.
  • Incumbent must also obtain First Aid and CPR certification within the first six (6) months of employment from the date of hire and maintain certification.
  • Participation in a departmental staff development program is a requirement.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend assignments.
  • Must possess the National Child Care Worker Certification (or equivalent) and Managing Aggressive Behavior Certification or earn it within the first six (6) months of employment from the date of hire.
  • Employees in, and applicants applying for, jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the "Community Code of Ordinances", Chapter 11, "Minors", Article X. "Investigation of Persons Working With Children".

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
