Annual Salary: $35,074.36 - $41,847.79
After successful completion of the six week Academy a YCO will be placed into step 1 of the 8-step YCO pay plan with a salary of $36,207.60 each year YCOs will advance to the next step on their anniversary date.
Promotional opportunities into a YCO II may be available after one year of YCO experience

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections is seeking Youth Correction Officer Is for our secure care schools located in Northwest Phoenix to start our next academy. This position is responsible for maintaining security, discipline, and supervision, in a therapeutic role, on daily basis for youth adjudicated by the court system.
- Checks unit for safety hazards or security violations
- Searches for weapons and contraband
- Uses portable two-way radio to communicate with officers and staff
- Inspects clothing and possessions of visitors
- Answers inquiries from parents/guardians, other agencies and departmental staff
- Manages records, log books, evaluations and other forms
- Assists teachers with classroom management
- Maintains daily/weekly classroom attendance records
- Attends meetings and training
- Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Human behavior to include growth, development, needs and problems of youth
- Proper methods and circumstances requiring use of force
- Language as it pertains to youth care, custody, treatment and rehabilitation
- Standard housekeeping practices
Skill in:
- Verbal and written communications
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Work both indoors and outdoors in varying Arizona weather conditions
- Learn and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, programs and activities established for the agency
- Learn and apply methods, techniques and correct practices of security procedures as they pertain to the state’s youth secure care facilities
- Maintain an understanding attitude toward juveniles in custody
- Participate in rehabilitation and/or treatment activities
- Provide assistance, guidance and direction to juveniles
- Provide positive pro-social role modeling
- Apply appropriate restraint techniques
- Respond to emergency situations and provide crisis intervention and first aid/basic life support
- Maintain a structured and secured environment
SPECIAL SELECTION FACTORS
Requires possession of, and ability to retain, a current valid Arizona-issued drivers license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

Requires successful completion of a paid six week ADJC Pre-Service Training Academy and a two week paid on-the-job training course.
SELECTIVE PREFERENCE
The preferred candidate will have one or more of the following: a high school diploma or GED; experience working with at-risk youth; military training experience; course work towards a degree in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social justice, counseling, mental health, social work or closely related field.
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred, but not required.

RETIREMENT
Refrigeration Mechanic (HVAC) position participates in the Corrections Officer Retirement Plan (CORP).
- CORP Tier 3 is a Defined Contribution, 401 (a) retirement plan
- New members have the opportunity to define their contribution amount
- Employer contributes a dollar-for-dollar match equal to 5% of a member's salary
- Employees are fully vested after 3 years of service
