Summary/Characteristicsof Position:

Youth Screener's provide professionalscreening and case management services for youth presented to the JuvenileAssessment Center (JAC) while determining eligibility for release, diversionprograms and/or detainment.

Essential Functions:

  • Completessubstance abuse and mental health screenings using Department approvedinstruments and forms to determine eligibility for release, diversionprograms and/or detainment.
  • Conductsface-to-face interviews with youth and his/her parent(s)/legal guardian(s) togather information, when available, to assess the youth's service needs.
  • Contactsvictim(s), complainants and/or arresting officer to solicit input andrecommendations.
  • Completesand furnishes recommendations to the State Attorney's Office utilizing informationgathered.
  • Completesadmission, detainment and/or non-arrest file packets for the court, the StateAttorney, the Department's Circuit Office, the youth's attorney, and theDepartment's Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
  • Inputsyouth data in the Juvenile Justice Information System.
  • CompletesDetention Screening Logs
  • Advisesyouth of his/her rights
  • Installselectronic monitoring (EM) equipment utilizing the Department's EM database.
  • Attendscourt hearings on weekends and holidays, in lieu of the Department, and adhereto a court rotation schedule.
  • Providescase management services that shall include, but not limited to, coordinationwith Department Juvenile Probation Officers, Detention Service Staff, thecourts, and other community-based providers.
  • Attendsmeetings, trainings and individual development sessions as assigned
  • Performs diversion related tasks.
  • Performrelated work as request/required.

Pre-requisite Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus two (2) years' experienceworking with youth
  • Associate's Degree may substitute for one (1) year of required workexperience.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in criminaljustice or social services may substitute for two (2) years of required workexperience.
  • Valid Florida Driver License

PreferredAttributes:

  • Associatesor Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice or related field

  • Abilityto make critical decisions in high stress situations
  • Excellentverbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizationalskills and attention to detail.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not superviseothers. This position reports directly to the Detention Screener Supervisor and/orProgram Director.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periodsof sitting
  • Must be able tolift up to 50 pounds
  • Physically able to participate in DJJ-approved crisis interventioncurriculum and CPR/First Aid training and able to apply same to work setting.

Work Environment: Performs duties in a secured settingwith law enforcement presence. This roleroutinely uses computer, mobile devices and standard office equipment.

Travel: Minimal travel required between ACTS and/orDJJ service locations. This position does not require overnight travel.
