  • &nbsp&nbspPOSITION SUMMARY
    Assists school nurse or nurse facilitator in caring for the health needs of children and staff at a MUSD school. Under the direct/indirect supervision of a school nurse, performs the essential functions of a health assistant.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Performs routine first aid procedures; assists in screening ill or injured students.
    • Upon evaluation, refers seriously ill or injured students to the emergency medical system (911).
    • Serves as a liaison between children, MUSD staff, school nurse, parents, and community and external health and social agencies.
    • Maintains student health records. Ensures health histories are recorded. Performs height and weight checks for each child and posts results to health records. May maintain diabetic student’s records and conduct diabetic sugar tests.
    • Tests hearing and vision of students and posts results to health records.
    • Notifies parents of failed screens and assists with follow up .
    • Gathers immunization history from parents, physicians and health care facilities and records on health record. Interprets immunization records. Inputs immunization data into records system.
    • Maintains a daily log of all students tended to, recording reason for visit and action taken; inputs data into computer.
    • Arranges for and assists nurse with special health programs such as: lice screening, fluoride administrations and immunization clinics.
    • Reports communicable diseases to appropriate health agency for further instruction.
    • May assist in medications distribution and monitoring of diabetic students as needed.
    • May schedule appointments, collect permission slips and fee payments for various available services.
    • May present and provide health related programs and services to various staff.
    • May assist with clerical duties such as answering phones, mail duties, etc.
    • Maintains health office supplies and orders supplies when needed.
    • Performs related duties as assigned.
    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
    • Knowledge of all basic first aid methods, including CPR, AED and training methods.
    • Awareness of the universal precautions for handling body fluids and blood borne pathogens. Must demonstrate proficiency with thermometer and sphygmomanometer.
    • Knowledge of substance abuse detection methods.
    • Knowledge of food allergy and appropriate use of Epi-Pen.
    • Knowledge of signs of respiratory distress.
    • Ability to recognize signs of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members.
    • Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies.
    • Ability to handle illness and injury to others in a professional manner.
    QUALIFICATIONS
    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • 1 year previous experience working with children
    • Two years’ work experience in a health care/medical setting.
    • Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
    • Previous clerical preferred
    • Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to reach with hands and arms. Moderate walking, climbing, stooping, bending, reaching and sitting for considerable periods of time may be required as a normal part of the job. The employee may be required to lift or move up to forty pounds and push students in wheel chairs.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    Indoors, and outdoor environment in all types of weather. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet to moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Will have contact with staff and the public.

    $12.89/hour (ASRS Retirees will have a lower hourly rate due to the Alternate Contribution Rate)

    10 Month position - 8 hours/day
