Position Description

This position with hours Monday-Thursday 6:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. is located in the Transportation Department,

Salary Grade: 47

Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signals, street lighting, other electrical and electronic traffic control devices, and related equipment in the shop and at field locations.

Installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects the construction of traffic signals, street lights, permanent traffic counting stations, aviation communication and navigational electrical devices, and other electrical devices;
Installs, maintains and repairs microprocessor-based solid state digital and analog traffic signal control and detection equipment including loop detector amplifiers, conflict monitors, traffic counters, microcomputers, traffic signal controllers, load switching devices and other electronic devices;
Operates test equipment to identify and isolate electronic malfunctions in the shop and at field locations;
Assembles and/or modifies traffic signal controllers, tests and diagnoses electronic equipment;
Performs scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance on traffic related electrical and electronic equipment;
Performs emergency diagnosis and repairs on a rotating, on-call basis, which may require the repair of electrical traffic control equipment, the removal and installation of electronic control cabinet components (such as controllers, conflict monitors and load switches), using an aerial lift truck to work at heights of 50 feet, and may require working in adverse weather conditions;
Identifies high voltage hazards within the work zone and complete work safely maintaining a safe working distance per industry standards;
Drives and operates aerial lift trucks to maintain and repair transportation related electrical devices;
Reviews and interprets approved construction plans and electrical schematics as a basis for conducting inspection or installation activities for traffic control devices to insure compliance with appropriate specifications and standards;
Meets with representatives of contractors, utility companies and appropriate County staff to insure coordinated work efforts or to resolve problems;
Prepares electronic and wiring schematics;
Maintains inventory records, determines equipment and material needs, and recommends or purchases required items;
Maintains temporary traffic control devices while working within active roadways to insure compliance with traffic safety regulations;
Maintains daily records of work performed and compiles construction project documentation;
Uses a computer to log and track work performed and to install, update, or configure software modules on equipment.


Knowledge of:

  • principles of electronics and electrical theory and maintenance;
  • operation of digital logic, microprocessor and memory devices;
  • practices, methods, tools and materials of industrial electrical installation, maintenance and repair and National Electric Codes and Regulations (NEC) including NFPA 70E;
  • procedures, equipment and tools needed for the repair and installation of electronic equipment;
  • electrical construction inspection procedures and techniques;
  • procedures, equipment and tools needed for the repair and installation of traffic signal and illumination devices, including jib crane and rigging techniques;
  • locating and identifying underground utilities and facilities;
  • Battery Backup System (BBS) operation and installation;
  • County, state and other local transportation related specifications;
  • procedures involved in the review of engineering plans and electrical schematics;
  • solid state electronics;
  • construction zone traffic control;
  • Electrical wiring, cable terminations, and splicing techniques;
  • occupational hazards and safety precautions of industrial electrical and electronics work, using both high and low voltage (up to 480V AC and 48V DC);
  • Mathematics and problem solving.

Skill in:
  • installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing traffic signals and lighting systems and related equipment, parts and circuitry;
  • operating and maintaining tools, equipment and materials encountered in area of assignment;
  • reading, interpreting and applying traffic control and general construction blueprints and electrical schematics;
  • inspecting and detecting work or construction not in compliance with appropriate specifications and standards;
  • establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;
  • communicating effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • taking accurate field notes and estimating material needs;
  • translating functional plans to electrical and circuit diagrams;
  • preparing and interpreting electrical circuit diagrams;
  • performing mathematical computations.
Minimum Qualifications

Five years of journey-level experience in the field of electrical or electronic construction, maintenance, and/or repair of electrical or electronic systems.

(Relevant education from an accredited college, trade school, or industry recognized apprenticeship program may substitute for up to three years of aforementioned experience.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Minimum two (2) years of traffic signals and lighting experience in the construction and/or maintenance of signals and lighting equipment.
  2. Minimum two (2) years experience in the maintenance and repair of electronics or electrical equipment.
  3. Minimum two (2) years experience in the interpretation of electrical circuit diagrams and blue prints.
  4. Minimum one (1) year experience installing and maintaining branch circuit wiring systems with a nominal voltage of 120 volts.
  5. Minimum one (1) year experience using computers to run word processing, database, and email programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, or equivalent.
Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine the applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. All positions require a valid Arizona class A or B commercial driver license (CDL) within six months of appointment. Failure to obtain/maintain the required license shall be grounds for termination.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: All positions may require any or all of the following: work independently in the field manually working on and installing electrical, electronic and other equipment; be able to see and hear traffic; lift and carry up to 75 pounds; ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms; operate bucket and boom trucks working at heights of 50 feet; safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment; work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, or cold; wear required safety clothing and equipment; differentiate between colors.
