Position Description

This position is in the Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department. OPEN UNTIL FILLED.

Salary Grade: 37

Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs of wastewater treatment facilities, conveyance systems and related equipment, and assists Trades Maintenance Specialists, Technicians and Wastewater Mechanics in performing non-routine maintenance, repairs or construction of these same facilities and systems.

An assessment may be administered.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)

Performs repairs and routine maintenance of industrial wastewater pumps, pumping systems, industrial electrical systems and power generating engines;
Assists Wastewater Mechanics and Trades Maintenance Specialists and Technicians in non-routine maintenance, repairs and construction of assigned facilities and systems;
Assists Wastewater Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater conveyance systems;
Assists other journey-level trade workers, such as painters, welders, electricians, and instrumentation technicians;
Assists specialists/technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of specialized equipment or controls;
Lifts and moves heavy materials, tools, and supplies;
Uses and maintains safety and personal protective equipment;
Performs operator-level maintenance, servicing and adjustments of common tools and equipment;
Performs worksite clean-up following completion of jobs;
May cut, trim, seed, fertilize and apply herbicides and pesticides to turf grasses, soils, trees and ornamental shrubs;
May lead Trades Maintenance Helpers, Technicians and other employees, volunteers, community service workers, inmates or detainees in performing routine facility and grounds clean-up and maintenance duties.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Knowledge of:

  • safety precautions common to an industrial maintenance/repair environment;
  • practices, methods and tools used in the maintenance and repair of industrial facilities, pumping systems, water or wastewater treatment or conveyance systems, electrical systems or power generating engines;
  • operating principles of wastewater treatment and conveyance systems.
Skill in:
  • following written and oral instructions;
  • performing heavy manual labor tasks;
  • using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools;
  • repairing and maintaining industrial facilities, pumping systems, electrical systems and power
  • generating engines;
  • using and maintaining safety and personal protective equipment;
  • performing operator-level maintenance, servicing and adjustment of assigned equipment and vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications

(1) Two years of experience working in industrial mechanical maintenance and repair, pumping systems, electrical systems or power generation engine maintenance. (Work experience limited to automotive, truck or heavy equipment maintenance is not qualifying experience.)
OR:
(2) One year of experience with Pima County as a Maintenance Mechanic, Utility Service Worker I, Trades Maintenance Helper or Trades Maintenance Technician in other than automotive, truck or heavy equipment repair and/or maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  1. Experience in industrial mechanical equipment, performing repairs and routine maintenance of industrial pumping systems, deep well turbine pumps, positive displacement pumps, submersible pumps, centrifugal booster pumps, gear boxes, plumbing, pipe fitting and/or compressor/blower maintenance.
  2. Experience inspecting, servicing, operating, and maintaining assigned hand/power tools and equipment (forklifts, man lifts, sandblasters, painting equipment and power washers).
  3. Experience leading employees and volunteers in performing routine facility/grounds clean-up and maintenance duties.
  4. Experience in basic computer skills.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/score against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Some positions may require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL), with appropriate endorsements, at the time of appointment or prior to the completion of initial/promotional probation. Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services review and approval of the candidates driving record.

Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education and criminal conviction history. Physical/Sensory Requirements: Post-offer physical is required. Some positions may carry the risk of exposure to asbestos or wastewater and sewage products, therefore special medical screening prior to or during employment may be necessary to assure employee health and safety. Some positions may require any or all of the following: lifting and carrying up to seventy-five pounds or more; wearing required safety clothing and equipment; working with or in the presence of obnoxious odors; working with noxious or potentially hazardous chemicals, compounds or products; ascending and descending ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites; differentiating between colors in industry-standard wiring.
