Job Description

Grand Canyon Universitys Athletics Sports Performance department is seeking a Graduate Assistant. Under the general direction of the Director of Sports Performance, the Graduate Assistant will primarily instruct, develop programming, train and monitor all phases of the strength and conditioning and personal training programs for specified athletic teams. .

Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Directors of Sports Performance develop, design, implement, and administer strength training programs unique to assigned sport(s) and to each individual student-athlete.
  • Provide instruction to student-athletes during strength and conditioning training sessions. Develop and establish goals, rules, expectations, and motivations for assigned teams and each individual student-athlete.
  • Provides nutrition counseling/ assessments for designated student athlete teams.
  • Ensure at all times that the equipment and exercises are following best practices to safeguard the student-athlete and the facility.
  • Develop programs by evaluating current physical conditioning, having a knowledge of the various sports and associated exercises, tailoring strength programs for specific needs, demonstrating proper performance of exercises, correcting mistakes; manages programs by monitoring progress and providing an assessment of development.
  • Abide by and comply with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and other appropriate Conference rules, academic standards, requirements, and policies of the University, and all guidelines and policies of the Athletics department and reports any concerns of compromise or violation of rules, standards, guidelines or policies to the Vice President of Athletics or the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director, Administration.
  • Direct appropriate pre-training session and pre-contest preparations and warm ups, and working with qualified sports medicine personnel or athletic trainers during all training sessions and contests.
  • Prepare periodic evaluations and progress reports regarding the progress, conditioning, and training of the student-athletes.
  • Demonstrate good judgment in coaching responsibilities, including orienting student-athletes and staff to proper equipment use, appropriate conditioning techniques, and use of the most up to date training and conditioning concepts;
  • Participate in clinics and lectures on strength and conditioning upon request.
  • Monitor appearance, maintenance, and organization of equipment in training facilities;
  • Assist in the education and enforcement of weight room rules.
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the University's intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Data input into tracking software.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required from accredited 4-year university, preferably in sports or health sciences discipline, e.g. Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Movement Science or other related field.
  • 0-2 years relevant experience in strength and conditioning coaching.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED required.
  • Possess a current credential with the National Strength and Conditional Association (CSCS) or Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (SCCCa).
  • Must have a thorough understanding of human physiology.
  • Knowledgeable of University, NCAA and Conference rules and regulations.
  • Participation in competitive High school or college athletics and the ability to articulate to student athletes the benefits of sports performance training preferred.
  • Good relationship management skills and ability to work cohesively in a team environment requiring good social and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite software and familiarity with team, game, meet management software preferred.
  • Must be enrolled in GCU masters program.
  • Must be able to maintain academic GPA of 3.0
  • May only work 20 hours per week but may require evenings and weekend hours.
