Job Description

MidFirst Bank is a family-owned financial institution headquartered in Oklahoma City and the largest privately owned bank in the United States, with more than $41 billion in assets. Since its founding in 1954, MidFirst has grown through organic expansion and strategic acquisitions while maintaining a strong commitment to relationship-based service, financial integrity, and long-term stability. The bank offers the resources and scale of a national institution with the client focus, agility, and continuity of private ownership.

Overview

MidFirst Bank is seeking an experienced Chief Tax Officer to lead a sophisticated tax function and serve as a trusted advisor across the bank and broader family enterprise. This role offers significant technical breadth, access to senior leadership and ownership, and the opportunity to guide tax strategy in a stable, privately held environment. The successful candidate will advise on complex tax planning, compliance, governance, and strategic matters while leading an experienced internal team.

This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for a tax executive who can provide technical oversight, strengthen trusted relationships, and support the continued evolution of the department. The role will succeed a long-tenured Chief Tax Officer with more than 35 years of service, making continuity, judgment, and thoughtful leadership essential to long-term success.

The Chief Tax Officer will operate within MidFirst’s combined bank and family enterprise structure, offering the breadth and complexity often associated with public accounting in the continuity of an in-house environment. Similar to a partner-level advisory role, this position serves as the organization’s primary tax authority and a key advisor to executive leadership and the family. Responsibilities are expected to include both MidFirst Bank tax matters and family office or broader family enterprise matters, with an estimated allocation of 40% bank-related work and 60% family enterprise work. The actual mix may vary based on planning cycles, transaction activity, and stakeholder needs.

The role includes complex tax and planning work for ultra-high-net-worth family enterprise matters, including multigenerational wealth transfer planning, trust and fiduciary matters, philanthropic initiatives, entity structuring, and coordination across a diverse portfolio of investments and operating businesses. The Chief Tax Officer will help evaluate these matters, manage risk, and advance long-term planning goals in partnership with family office leadership and ownership.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Enterprise Tax Strategy and Executive Advisory
  • Bank Tax Planning and Compliance
  • Family Office Tax Planning and Compliance
  • Department Leadership, Talent Development, and Process Improvement
  • External Advisor and Cross-Functional Relationship Management

Education and License Requirements

  • Master’s degree in accounting, with a tax concentration or equivalent specialized tax experience preferred
  • CPA required

Technical Experience and Leadership

15–25+ years of tax experience advising across multiple entity types and industries, with preference for candidates who bring:

  • Public accounting experience
  • Experience supporting high-net-worth individuals or family office structures
  • Familiarity with estate, gift, trust, fiduciary, and private foundation tax matters
  • Familiarity with financial institutions or complex financial services businesses
  • Strong knowledge of federal and multistate tax compliance, planning, and reporting requirements
  • Proven experience leading, managing, and developing tax professionals

 Professional Skills

  • Work independently while collaborating effectively with executive leadership, internal stakeholders, and external advisors
  • Exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations while balancing technical defensibility, business objectives, cost, risk, and reputation
  • Communicate complex tax matters clearly to senior leaders, family office stakeholders, and non-tax audiences
  • Balance responsive, service-oriented support for family office stakeholders with the governance, discipline, and risk management required in a complex corporate environment
  • Manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and apply sound judgment in a complex, confidential environment
  • Demonstrate professionalism, discretion, integrity, and a commitment to high-quality service

Ideal Profile

The ideal candidate is an accomplished tax professional who combines strong technical judgment with practical leadership and advisory skills. This individual should be comfortable working in confidential, highly regulated environments where tax strategy aligns with business priorities, governance, risk management, and long-term planning. They must be able to clearly communicate recommendations to executive leadership, family members, and non-tax stakeholders.

This leader will bring credibility with experienced tax professionals, confidence managing sensitive and technically complex matters, and sound judgment in determining when to leverage internal expertise, external advisors, or broader policy engagement. The successful candidate will be intellectually curious, highly organized, and service-oriented, with the ability to build on the strengths of an established department while enhancing processes, documentation, collaboration, and long-term tax planning support.
