ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS:
Primary functions include: gathering news to keep the Gila River Indian Community
informed about important events, announcements and information by playing an active role in obtaining
newspaper content for the GRIN, GRTV News, and social media outlets. Serves as back up the Managing Editor
as lead correspondent during times of emergency/crisis situations, public safety incidences and other important
events and assists with oversight of the Gila River Indian Newspaper.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Community Newsperson’ s develops leads and writes stories about events and activities concerning the people
of the Gila River. The position exists to inform Community members about topics relevant to them regarding
tribal government, success stories, and public events. A large number of Community members utilize the GRIN
to be informed about news in Gila River and living within the boundaries of the reservation or outside.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
0 Develop leads and stories that will be published in up-coming issues of the GRIN. Includes conducting
interviews and following up with individuals associated with the story.
0 Take photos of Community events and activities that will be published in the GRIN or other CPAO ran social
media outlet.
0 Assist the Graphic Web Department when staff is out of the office to ensure there are no gaps in posting
Community and Government information.
0 Assist the CPAO staff when additional staff is needed to help with the coordination of events through
volunteered time.
0 Perform administrative tasks such as running CPAO staff meetings on an assigned schedule.
0 Take pictures of GRIC staff events and functions when the coordinating department requests GRIN to take
pictures, i.e., award ceremonies, swearing in, and presentations included are: visiting dignitaries and
representatives from government and business entities.
0 Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
o Knowledgeable of office management and administrative procedures.
0 Knowledgeable of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
0 Knowledge in journalism, advertising, publication, desktop publishing, data/word processing and typing
skills.Knowledge of photography concepts, use of a 35 mm camera and maintain a photography archive.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe.Ability to research data, create ideas, writing copy, and laying out graphic design.Ability to work with rigid deadline and the ability to effectively handle multiple priorities.Ability to demonstrate a personal interest for self-development.Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the
general public.
0 Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Journalism or a closely related
?eld and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in newspaper publication journalism, communications, media
and article/ feature writing or any combination of education, training, or experience which demonstrates the ability
to perform the duties of this position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Three (3) letters of recommendation and provide examples of writing ability (i.e., newspaper, magazine, brochure,
photographs etc.).Will be required to work after regular working hours, weekends and holidays.Required to obtain a Tribal Driving permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record for
the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be
submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the
application.Non-Supervisory, Salaried Position
