Under general supervision of the Community Relations Director, the Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of communications, public relations and marketing strategies and platforms that enable the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) to effectively engage its members and nurture the Community and workplace culture. The position is responsible for overseeing the writing, development and editing of various forms of communication for print, online and digital formats including social media, multimedia, advertisements, newsletters, press releases and websites. Providing the dissemination of information for and to the SRPMIC and public. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Examples of Tasks

Leadership: Provides direction and supervision on division and department goals and objectives.
  • Oversees and manages the Communications and Marketing division and provides supervision for the Media Relations and Social Media Specialists
  • Manages, oversees and provides development opportunities for media relations and social media
  • Prioritize, coordinates, and monitors assigned staff workflow and time
  • Evaluates and improves the effectiveness of the division service delivery
  • Evaluates performance of assigned staff and prepares Employee Performance Appraisal Reports (EPARS)
  • Prepares division quarterly and annual reports; monitors trends through statistical data
  • Coordinates with department divisions to facilitate workflow, timeliness and support
  • Oversees internal communications needs, from developing content to conducting marketing meetings
  • Facilitates group meetings with SRPMIC departmental and enterprise public relations and social media representatives
  • Serves as spokesperson as needed on media responses for SRPMIC including write and edit internal and external press releases; coordinates interviews, press conferences, tapings, and more
  • Assist with the coordination and planning of special projects and events

Communication & Marketing:
  • Develops and implements marketing and communications campaigns and strategies and monitor their success
  • Define key performance indicators for each communications channel which will indicate a campaigns level of success
  • Determine strategic communications campaigns that will help further organizational goals
  • Create internal communications protocol and initiatives that will foster engagement and awareness
  • Oversee the creation of marketing and communications collateral to ensure it is consistent with the SRPMIC values, including print, online and digital formats
  • Hosts public information events as well as organize outreach efforts at community partnership events and business expos to promote SRPMIC
  • Coordinates and participates in marketing and advertising campaigns for the department
  • Partners with multimedia to develop marketing and advertisement content
  • Develops, coordinates and communicate messaging to convey and engage the public
  • Explores new concepts to enhance the division through social media and multimedia use

  • May lead and direct the daily operational work of assigned support staff


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the culture, history and government of the Salt River Pima - Maricopa Indian Community
  • Knowledge of public information/relations principles and practices
  • Knowledge and proficient in social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, etc.) and how they can be deployed
  • Knowledge and proficient in e-marketing
  • Knowledge of internet web page maintenance
  • Knowledge of AP news writing style, grammar, headline, and caption writing and page layout
  • Ability to demonstrate exemplary teamwork, working under pressure, time management, planning, and organization
  • Knowledge of multimedia including audio, video, and design
  • Skill writing feature stories, news stories and other public information/relations articles
  • Skill identifying and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive and important information
  • Skill preparing and marketing effective advertising copy
  • Skill developing and maintaining effective working relationships at all levels of the Tribal Government and Community as well as with representatives from external organizations
  • Skill with Adobe Suite and other software programs required for social media, multimedia and web-based production
  • Skill using personal computer and related software including MS Windows and MS Office and/or MAC
  • Skill translating research data for advertising, subscriptions and writing news and feature copy
  • Skill demonstrating creative thinking
  • Skill with business practices, management and financial operations
  • Ability to provide complex decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Ability to effectively manage production deadline stress and perform well under pressure.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to adapt to changing work situations and assignments
  • Ability to respond to inquiries in a timely, accurate and courteous manner
  • Ability to read, comprehend, interpret and follow complex verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or closely related field required.


  • Experience: 4 years' experience in marketing, advertising, public relations or directly related field. One (1) of the 4 years' must include experience marketing programs and services through social media outlets


  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered


  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position will be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill


Special Requirements
  • Will be required to work outside normal business hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
