DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Cultural Resource Specialist consults with Federal agencies, museums, and institutions nationwide for
repatriation of ancestral human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony in
accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA). The Cultural
Resource Specialist consults with state, cities, towns and private entities for repatriation of ancestral human
remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of tribal patrimony in accordance with two Arizona Burial
Discovery laws, both enacted in 1990. Coordinates and assists Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) District
Communities in reburial ceremony activities for ancestral human remains and funerary objects that were removed
from GRIC District Communities in various land development projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Respond to Federal Register Notices of Inventory Completions and other correspondences from museums,
institutions, and federal repositories in order to review inventory listings of ancestral human remains,
funerary objects of cultural patrimony that are culturally af?liated with Akimel Oodham and Pee Posh of
the Gila River Indian Community.Maintain computer database ?les for all NAGPRA and Arizona Burial Discovery Laws correspondences,
reports, and on-going consultation communications for the administrative record.Initiate NAGPRA consultations with museums, institutions and federal agencies by arranging visits to
view ancestral human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony subject
to repatriation under NAGPRA that re culturally af?liated with Akimel Oodham and Pee Posh of the Gila
River Indian Community.Consult With federal agencies on federal undertakings in accordance with the National Historic
Preservation Act, Section 106 and NAGPRA, Section B that impacts ancestral heritage archeological sites
and traditional cultural properties.Consult with State, Cities, towns and private entities when proposed land development projects Will
adversely impact ancestral heritage archaeological sites in accordance with two Arizona Burial Discovery
Laws subject to repatriation of ancestral human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, sacred objects
and objects of tribal patrimony.Coordinate and assist GRIC District Communities in reburial ceremony activities and reports to the GRICCultural Resource Standing Committee on matters related to NAGPRA and burial Discovery Laws.
- Contributes in generating THPO monthly reports, Semi-Annual Reports, and Annual Report to Cultural
Resource Standing Committee and the Community Council. Assists in the development of the Four Southern Tribes Cultural Resource Working Group monthly
meetings. Reports to GRIC Cultural Resource Standing Committee and Community Council on matters culturally
af?liated with Akimel Oodham and Pee Posh of the Gila River Indian Community0 Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY:Knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and
Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), Traditional Cultural Places (TCP), and Arizona Burial Discovery Law.
Knowledge of the Gila River Indian Community, its government and decision-making structure; strong
familiarity about both Akimel Oodham and Maricopa cultural beliefs and practices preferred.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Of?cials
and the general public.Knowledge and ability to use word processing and database systems for job related tasks.Ability to perform potentially physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (such as hiking
rugged terrain and mountain ranges, extreme heat, wildlife/insects, etc.)Ability to express ideas clearly, in written reports and other documentation.REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associates degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, or Native American Studies and four (4) years experience
working with NAGPRA issues, museum science, or Native American History.Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Anthropology or Native American Studies
preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Required to obtain a Tribal Operators permit. Valid state drivers license with a current proof of driving
record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record
must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission
of the application.Non-Supervisory, Salaried Position
