Description

The Arapahoe County Department of Human Services builds strong communities by promoting the safety, independence and stability of individuals and families. The Department is looking for volunteers to work alongside our staff to help us in working towards our mission and providing excellent customer service to community members and families in Arapahoe County. We have positions that can accommodate daytime, evening, or weekend hours and a range of interests and skills.
 
Volunteers make a difference in the lives of families and children in need in Arapahoe County. We are currently recruiting for volunteers to assist in the following areas: Child and Adult Protection Services (CAPS), Operations, and Community and Child Support Services (CCSS).

Duties

The following duty statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the various volunteer positions and do not include other non-essential or marginal duties that may be required. The County reserves the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of the volunteer position at any time.
 
Information Ambassador: Volunteers are needed to greet and direct visitors who are seeking public assistance benefits from the Department of Human Services. Volunteers will answer questions, assist residents with applications for assistance programs, and be a friendly face for the County. This position is at the Aurora office. We ask that volunteers in this position commit to one 2-4 hour shift a week between the hours of 8AM-4:30PM, Monday-Friday.

Staff Support Services: The Staff Support Services Volunteer provides a variety of support to staff. We ask that volunteers in this position commit to one 2-4 hour shift a week between the hours of 8AM-4:30PM, Monday-Friday. The position is primarily located in the Aurora office (14980 East Alameda Drive), but there is the possibility for opportunities at the Littleton office (1690 W Littleton Boulevard). 
Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing administrative support and assistance to CAPS, Operations and CCSS staff. This support could include data entry, filing, assisting with special events and special projects.
  • Preparing new employee orientation packets and information packets for child support clients
  • Collecting, sorting, organizing and distributing valuable community donations that are provided to children and families in need of emergency clothing, diapers, toiletries and more (Bare Necessities Closet)

Family Support Services: The Family Support Services Volunteer provides a variety of support and assistance to children and families that are clients of Arapahoe County Human Services. We ask that volunteers in this position commit to one 2-4 hour shift a week between the hours of 8AM-4:30PM, Monday-Friday. The position is located in the Aurora office (14980 East Alameda Drive), but may require some travel throughout the metro-Denver area. 
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing temporary care and support for children that have just been removed from an unsafe situation
  • Providing temporary care and support for children while parents/caregivers attend important meetings at the Department or offsite
  • Helping transport children to and from visitations with their parents (Aurora office location only)
 
Foster/Kin Family Respite: In this position you could be helping foster and kinship families with a variety activities. These could include: childcare, tutoring, shopping, laundry, facilitating family activities and other things that may help alleviate some of the stress that foster and kin families can feel. You and your assigned family will determine the days, times and activities you will help with based on your availability and their needs and schedule. This position requires a commitment of at least 3 hours a week to provide respite assistance for your assigned family. Requirements

Age 21 or older.

Good interpersonal skills.

A desire to work with some of our County's most vulnerable adults, children and families.

For some positions a basic familiarity with computers and common office software packages are essential.
 
Must successfully pass a background check.
 
Commit to volunteer in the position for a minimum of six months to one year.

Supplemental Information

This in an unpaid volunteer opportunity with Arapahoe County Department of Human Services.
 
Volunteers will receive the training and supervision necessary to handle the job and work together with staff to provide a meaningful and rewarding experience for the public and the volunteer.
