Tribal Driving Permit Required: YesDISTINGUISHING FEATURE OF THE CLASS:The Deputy Fire Chief assists in planning, directing, and reviewing the activities and operations of the Fire
Department, which includes ?re suppression, hazardous material mitigation, ?re and life safety code compliance,
emergency medical services, and administrative support services. The Deputy Fire Chief assists in coordinating
assigned activities with other Community departments and outside agencies. This position provides highly
responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develop, plan, and implement department goals and objectives; Recommend and administer policies and
procedures; Manage either the Administrative or Operations Division of the Gila River Fire Department.
Coordinate department/division activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and
organizations; provide staff assistance to the Community Manager and Council; Prepare and present staff
reports and other necessary correspondence.Participate in the development of the Departments work plan; Assign work activities, projects, and programs;
Monitor work ?ow and review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.Participate in the development and administration of the Fire department budget; Participate in the forecast of
funds needed for staf?ng, equipment, materials, and supplies; Monitor and approve expenditures and
implement mid-year adjustments.Participate in recommending the appointment of personnel; Provide and/or coordinate staff training with
employees to correct de?ciencies; Implement disciplinary procedures, which may involve recommending
employee terminations.Respond to major emergencies and assist with emergency service activities as necessary.Prepare a variety of technical and departmental activity reports and records.Act as Fire Chief as needed.Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY:Knowledge of organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs,
policies and organization needs.Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, preparation, administration, and personnel
management.Knowledge of principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques of modern ?re and life safety and ?re suppression
activities.Knowledge of operation, maintenance and uses of ?re?ghting equipment and apparatus.Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Community laws, codes and regulations.Ability to plan, direct, and review ?re suppression, ?re and life safety code compliance, emergency medical
service activities, and hazardous materials emergencies.Ability to effectively plan, supervise and coordinate work of others.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and
implement recommendations in support of goals.Ability to develop and administer department/division policies.Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, Community
Of?cials and the public.Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public
Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related ?eld and six (6) years experience in ?re service
and which includes two (2) years at the level of a Battalion Chief or equivalent; OrAssociates degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public
Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related ?eld and eight (8) years experience in ?re
service and which includes two (2) years at the level of a Battalion Chief or equivalent.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Currently or have had all Fire?ghter associated requirements, Fire Instructor I, Incident Safety Of?cer,
Supervisory Training for Fire?ghters, Fire tactics and Strategy, Human Resource Management in the Fire
Service, Gila River Fire Of?cer Preparation.All of the above courses must be obtained within 24 months from date of hire/promotion.NIIMS certi?cations as required. May be required to obtain certain certi?cations that apply to the position.
Required to pass a background check and ?ngerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must
continue to maintain throughout duration of employment.Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community
Children in accordance with The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 US. C.
Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly.
Required to obtain a Tribal Operators permit. Valid state drivers license with a current proof of driving
record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record
must be submitted with application and must not he more than 60 days old from the date of submission
