POSITION PURPOSE:
The Dietary Aide is responsible for assisting the cook in the preparation and service of meals for patients, employees, visitors, and special hospital events. The Relief Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritionally adequate and culturally acceptable food for patients, employees, visitors and special hospital events.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
The position of Dietary Aide requires the incumbent possess the minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Previous foodservice experience is desirable, but not required. The individual must have the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Good physical health with the ability to lift heavy objects is required.

When working in the capacity of Relief Cook, the individual must have at least one year of experience in food preparation. The individual must have knowledge of standardized food production. It would be beneficial to understand basic nutrition with emphasis in therapeutic diets. He/She must have the ability to communicate both orally and in writing and must have the ability to operate all equipment within the dietary department.

ENVIRONMENT:
South Peninsula Hospital is a 45 bed acute care/LTC facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The Dietary Aide is exposed to food, grease, steam, water, detergents and other cleaning chemicals, heat, cold, and noise. There may be times when the Dietary Aide/Relief Cook is exposed to sharps and body fluids. There are risks to cuts, falls, bums, back injury due to lifting, and frequent temperature changes. This position requires working rotating shifts which include weekends, holidays, early and late shifts.
