DIRECTOR, PLANNING AND ZONING
Job Description
The Director, Planning and Zoning is responsible for planning, supervising, organizing, managing and
coordinating land use activities on the Gila River Indian Community reservation to insure a beneficial pattern of
land usage in keeping with Community values and ordinances.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Provide leadership, direction and supervision to Planning and Zoning staff, Building Inspector and Ordinance
Enforcement personnel.
Administer and aid in the enforcement of existing land related Ordinances and Tribal Building Codes.
Supervise all staff work for the Planning and Zoning Commission including correspondence, minutes,
agendas, technical review and other staff work as required.
Coordinate activities and plan as appropriate with other branches of the Tribal Government, the Indian Health
Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs and off-reservation units.
Assist the Planning & Zoning Commission in preparing necessary plans and ordinances to ensure a beneficial
pattern of land usage in keeping with Community values.
Conduct strategic planning to identify short and long-term goals towards departmental objectives.
Present budget estimates, control expenditures of departmental appropriations, and establish operational
standards for the department.
Serve as a technical advisor on development issues by preparing reports or studies for the Tribal Executive
and Legislative branches of government, Community Council and other organizations.
Serve as a technical advisor on planning and zoning matters to the Community and other organizations.
Interpret GRIC Zoning Ordinances, Tribal Building Codes, departmental policies and procedures to the
Community, staff, Bureau of Indian Affairs, contractors, architects and engineers.
Administer the program budget including federal agencies.
