Job Description

SUMMARY


The Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and providing administrative support and programmatic support for the Cocopah Indian Tribe’s education programs and services for the tribal membership and community, including overseeing the day-to-day operations for the department. This position is the liaison between school districts and the Cocopah tribal community, assisting students, parents, tribal members, schools, educational institutions, and community partners by providing information, resources, and assistance related to educational opportunities and programs.  This position will work with and collaborate with the Cocopah Education Board.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Coordinates the day-to-day administrative activities of the Education Department and assists with the implementation of education programs and services.
  • Ensures as a primary point of contact for students, parents, Tribal members, schools, colleges, universities, educational organizations, and community members seeking information about available education programs and services. Provide information and assistance regarding educational opportunities, programs, scholarships, tutoring, vocational training, higher education, and other available resources..
  • Ensure that students and applicants are assisted with education-related applications, forms, enrollment documents, scholarship applications, and required supporting documentation. Maintain accurate and confidential student, participant, applicant, scholarship, and program records in accordance with applicable policies and procedures..
  • Develop and maintain organized filing systems, databases, spreadsheets, and tracking systems for Education Department activities. Assists with monitoring student progress and maintaining appropriate documentation as required by department programs. Administer federal or state grants such as Johnson O'Malley, and be responsible for quarterly and annual reports.
  • Propose and manage department budgets and expenditures.
  • Organize cultural enrichment activities, family engagement nights, and professional development training for school staff.
  • Responsible for organizing the education banquet award ceremony.
  • Responsible for processing the education clothing gift cards.
  • Responsible for the planning and organization of the JOM summer program.
  • Establish and coordinate in-school tutoring programs and other after-school activities.
  • Directing, monitoring, and supervising education services and staff.
  • Develop policies and procedures for operating and serving student grant and scholarship needs.
  • Hold monthly staff meetings with department staff to monitor progress and address/correct problem areas.
  • Prepare and submit a monthly department report to the tribal council.
  • Establish a network system for all the tribal education programs to improve and enhance services, information, referrals, and resources for students.
  • Coordinate tribal education programs for better utilization of staff, equipment, and special programs, to improve the quality of services for students.
  • Evaluate and implement a system to develop and improve student advisement services, relationships with school programs, and awards of scholarships & grants to students.
  • Assess and implement consistent student incentive programs for elementary, middle school, high school, special education, and gifted students.
  • Other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


  • Knowledge of social and economic education problems on the reservation.
  • Familiarity with Cocopah history and federal Indian education guidelines preferred.
  • Knowledge of educational programs, resources, and services.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of student services, community outreach, and program coordination.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to identify problems, determine appropriate solutions, and follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of community education resources.
  •  

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Strong background in education planning and program assessment, and the ability to work with tribal members and the general public.
  • Grant writing experience preferred; monitoring and reporting required.
  • Must be able to undergo and pass a DPS/FBI fingerprint background investigation.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE


  • Bachelor’s degree in education, business administration, human services, social services, or a related field
  • 5 years of experience working in an educational institution, Tribal education program, government agency, or community-based organization. 
  • Experience working with Native American students, families, or Tribal communities is preferred.
